2001- What a Year
Garrafrauns had the unique distinction last year of reaching the county final in both the boys and girls Cumann na mBunscol competition. The girls won the first ever county final in Dunmore on June 9th when they defeated Castlehackett N.S in the final. They won their way final . They won their way to the final by defeating Mountbellew, Bealach Liath and Ballinasloe in a blitz in Mountbellew. They won their matches emphatically, led superbly by Barbara Hannon and by their captain Sheena Quinn. Barbara Hannon was chosen as player of the tornament and was picked to represent Garrafrauns N.S on the Galway girls team which played Roscommon prior to the Galway! Roscommon semi final. Catlehackett N.S emerged as winners of their group and two teams met in the county final in Dunmore on June 9th. The match was evenly balanced and Garrafrauns emerged as worthy winners over a gallant Castlehacket. It was historic victory for the school. The boy's team captained by Damien Redington distinguished themselves equally. They reached their county defeating Glinsk, Moylough and Brierfield N.S. But alas, the double was denied then when they came up against an " in form " Cahergal N.S team in the final. That evening there was great celebrations in Garrafrauns N.S when both teams were treated to a marvellous home coming party.
