In 1981 he received first prize in the International Guitar Competition of Granada and was honored by the legendary doyen Andres Segovia . Since then he - as a soloist - has been giving concerts in Switzerland, Austria, the Benelux countries, Italy, France, Spain, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Greece, Turkey, Israel, USA, Chile and Cuba. He has participated in various top-class chamber orchestras, like the Ensemble Modern, Nomos Quartet and Norddeutscher Figuralchor, and performed all major concertos for guitar and orchestra.
Frank Bungarten is to be counted among the guitar soloists with the greatest live repertoire today. This is verified by a series of recordings on the famous MD&G label presenting complete cycles of his work.Seven solo CDs have been released until now, i.a. the very first recording of J.S. Bach's violin sonata transcripts for guitar.
24 Caprichos de Goya by Castelnuovo-Tedesco was awarded the ‘Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik' (German Record Critics Prize); ‘Audio Reference Prize 1998' was bestowed upon Elogio de la Guitarra comprising masterpieces by Joaquin Rodrigo.
At present he holds a chair at the University of Music and Theatre in Hanover and at the Musical College in Lucerne Academy of Music (Switzerland) and conducts regular mastercourses on an international level.
