Gobi From The Beginning

Well lads and ladies, I suppose ye are all dying to know where it all started. Well, over four ago, Eoin, Willie, Richie (on lead guitar) and Graham Coffey (on sticks) formed a band called “Gobi”. Our first gig was Mid1998 in the Curragh Inn. Our P.A. consisted of a mere H & H head and two tops. (Them were the days) A few months later Graham left the band and it was the energetic (and loud) Eamon O’ Rourke who took his place. Willie then bought the Studiomaster mixing desk and a set of tops. That was our rig for at least a year. In the summer of 1999, with the help of Gerry, we purchased bins, tops and a peavey power amp. Our tour of Leinster included venues like the Hideout in Kilcullen, the Eyre Powell in Newbridge and Fables in Tallaght. One of the most memorable gigs would be the support gig played with Aslan in the Soundhouse (see gallery for pics). Understandably, Aslan wouldn’t let us use any of their gear so it ended up only being Willie and Richie that played in the end. Still it remains our “claim to fame”.

Then early 2000, Eamo left the band. The summer of 2000 saw the introduction of Con on guitar and we enjoyed the talents of Con and Richie on lead guitar. Domo Thorpe and Dave Morrissey filled in on drums for almost a year. Then in January 2001 Richie left the band. And then there were four. After almost a year of fill in drummers and a brief spell of Eddie on keyboards .We had our share of Buy and Sell drummers, we were introduced to Hal. After a lot of bonding (Go Team!) Hal seemed eager to join the band we took him on board. That is how we became the Gobi you all know today.

At this stage we would like to thank all the people who have helped us over the years. I hope I haven’t left anybody out.

Our sincere thanks to: Richie, Graham, Eamo, Domo Thorpe, Dave Morrissey, Wayne Dunne, Dave Carugo, Eddie Sood, Michael and Nuala Lambe, Phil and Gerry, Joan and Frank, Dowlings of Prosperous, Aslan, The Curragh Inn, O.J., 9V batteries, Mammy Moran, Eamon O’ Rourke (Snr.), Con Bradley (Snr.) for lend of the van, Clane Youth Club, Deirdre and Kevin at D.K.
