3rd January

Original Hedgerow, leg 1.

Mostly dull.

A little lesson on "seeing is not believing":

I found a Primrose on December 31st. This is the first of the new season's specimens and is a little early, although we have had a very mild winter so far (2 nights with temperatures below zero). Due to the position of the flower (rear of a deep, narrow ditch), it was not possible to get a face-on shot of the flower, only a side view. There was also no light down there. So I had to take shots with the lens wide open (f2.8). This, of course, means no depth of field, so I couldn't get both edges of the flower in focus at the same time. The image on the left shows the near petals in focus; the second shows the far petals in focus.

Neither shot is really good enough to publish.

However, with a little help from Photoshop, I managed to extract the in-focus petals from the left-hand image and blend them into the shot with the rear petals in focus:

You almost can't see the join.
