18th October

Next>

These are the non-fungal images I took during the foray at Glenveigh on Saturday 16th, and the Ards forest foray on 17th October.

Dull with occasional showers.

This Spiny Heath was growing along the edge of the Lough. I was surprised to find that it's related to the heathers. A naturalised escape.

The Rowans are well-berried this year. Some people are predicting that a harsh winter is indicated by all the berries we are seeing. I remain to be convinced.

I showed the Red Valerian from the wall of Kilkenny Castle in September. This is a better shot from the wall of Glenveigh Castle.

I spotted this Feathered Thorn Moth clinging on to a Rhododendron leaf at the edge of the lake. It's one of the later moths that we expect to see.

This little (2 cm) black caterpillar was sitting motionless on grass near the sea. I can see why it was trying to hide: The right hand image shows the next blade of grass supporting half a black caterpillar.

Sea Rocket on the left and another Harebell on the right (I just can't ignore flowers with water droplets on them).

This Sea-Spurge is one of the most architectural plants I've seen. Wonderfully complex and sharp construction.

Thanks to Matthew for the on-the-spot correction to my initial identification.

This is Wild Thyme, with individual flowers about  5mm. across. I have yet to detect any scent from the leaves.
