Dull, cold and wet.
The life-cycle of mosses is quite complex. I've shown plenty of images of the capsules of this Polytrichum, but these yellow spikes are an earlier sexual stage in the cycle. (Old capsule stalks can be seen going upwards out of the image.)
This is another specimen I'll keep an eye on. I'm sure I haven't seen the capsules of this one, yet. Specimens about 15mm tall.
