The Rolfing Series

Dr Rolf developed her concept of Rolfing® around a basic series of 10 Rolfing® sessions. Each session has its own goals, which build on the previous sessions work.

Each session starts with an evaluation of the client’s structure. This involves observing the structure of the client's body, both whilst standing and whilst walking. Rolfers are trained to see a body’s structural organisation – and to use their manipulation skills in order to enhance that organisation in the field of gravity. As well as doing a visual analysis the Rolfer may also perform some functional tests.

After the evaluation the remainder of the session will consist of physical manipulation of the body in combination with some movement exercises where appropriate. Towards the end of the session the Rolfer will once again observe the client in standing and in walking, before finishing the session with some techniques to integrate the work of the session.

An important part of the treatment is to encourage the client to become aware of postural and movement habits, and to explore new possibilities in posture and movement. During the session the client may also be asked to use breathing and synchronised movements whilst the Rolfer works in order to increase body awareness and achieve better results.
