The Primary Valuation, which was carried out between 1848 and
1865, was intended to settle the valuation of each house and holding in the
country for the purposes of local taxation. The valuation books give names of
the occupiers of land and buildings and of the persons from whom these are
leased, the amount of land and the valuation of the property.
