We had a couple of good cup runs in the AOH and in the County Cup, but it
was in the Presidents Cup
that we acieved our first big breakthrough.
In the final at Turners Cross we defeated Douglas all 2 - 1.
It was our first big AUL trophy and great credit must go to the team and
Manager.
Match Report:
Leeside captured their first cup in League football when
they beat Douglas Hall United 2-1 in a thrilling President's Cup final at
Turner's Cross . Douglas dominated the early exchanges and efforts by
Brian Martin and Paddy Kirby worried the Leeside defence.
The winners took the lead in the 27th minute. Kieran Horgan broke up a
Douglas attack and found Dan Greene on the left edge of the box. Greene's
footwork left his marker stranded and then he scored with a surprise near
post shot that went in off the scrambling keeper.
Douglas scored a deserved equaliser just before the break. A good move
involving Brian Martin and Con Harrington ended with a Jimmy Madden shot
being deflected over. The Corner was headed powerfully towards goal by
Niall Creedon. The ball came back off the post but Douglas skipper Jack
Kent was on hand to force it home.
Leeside's winner came in the 60th minute. A left wing clearance by Eddie
Horgan was misheaded by a Douglas defender. Greene reacted quickest of all
an touched the loose ball past the advancing keeper.
Douglas fought back well and deserved an equaliser. But luck wasn't on
their side. For instance, in the 72nd minute a superb long ball by Con
Harrington sent sub Brian Foley racing in from the left but his shot came
back off the post. Seconds later, a powerful shot by Con Harrington came
off a defender and bit the bar.
We also got to the final of the Saxone cup and after a very hard match
which went to extra time and
penalties we went down 5 - 4 to Avondale.
