THE  SEASON 1990/91

HISTORY

1990-91

A fantastic year for the club .
After a few barron years we won the league and County Cup double.
In the County Cup we defeated Macroom Wanderers 4 - 0 at home.In the next round we beat Strand UTD 4 - 1 on a terrible December day.
Then we met with Macrooms first team ,a 2 - 1 win sent us on our way to meet Boher Celtic whom we beat 5 - 0. This set us up for a semi-final with Hibernians. The first leg of the semi-final was played at home with a weak Leeside team losing 2 - 0. The following Sunday we travelled to Hibernians with a much stronger team.We were 3 - 1 up at full time. This sent the game into extra time and both teams failed to score. And so to penalties. After a tense shootout we went through to meet Coachford in the final. In the final Coachford started well and took the lead before halftime.
John O' Sullivan headed ome the equalizer mid way through the second half 1 - 1 at full time meant we had to go to extra time again. At the end of extra time both teams had failed
to score and so it all came down to penalties.
After a tense shootout, in which Denis McCarthy played a blinder in goal, Leeside had won by 4 - 3.
A great night was had by all in the Elm Tree.
We won the league without loosing a single match.

County Cup Match Report:
WELL DONE to Leeside on there County Cup,
triumph. Congratulations to all the players, to the
supporters, and to manager Richard O'Donoghue.
The full blooded encounter provided over two hours
of exciting entertainment, Leeside eventually beating
Coachford in the penalty shoot-out after the sides had
finished at 1-1.

Coachford started the better and had a clear edge in the first half, that edge given them by the speed of their front three. That speed was evident from the opening minute when Deccie Murphy broke on the left to send in a cross that was headed over the bar by Denis O'Connell. In the 15th minute a Leeside defender was booked after bringing down the flying Murphy.
Leeside themselve's had a half chance in the 15th minute when Frank Horgan did well to get in a low cross, Trevor Dunlea stretched to reach it but keeper Mick Murphy got there first. In the 28th minute, a low free by Dec Murphy caused consteration in the Leeside defence as it sped across the goal area and wide of the far post.
The rest of the first half was disrupted by a string of injuries, none of them serious, in this hard but fairly fought contest. Leeside started well in the second half and Coachford had a let off in the 48th minute when Kenny O'Brien beat keeper Murphy to an O'Connor pass but the ball ran wide. Five minutes later, Coachford's midfield
dynamo Mick Walsh put Deccie Murphy clear with a header. But full back Kieran Hayes recovered to put Murphy under pressure and the shot hit the side netting.
The 55th minute saw the start of a dramatic and crucial sequence. Walsh found Martin with a great pass but Martin's rocket bounced off the post. The ball came back to him and his cross was cleared. Leeside broke and forced a corner which was headed to the net by Johnny O'Sullivan.
In the 64th minute, a cross by Declan Aherne was half cleared by Timmy Kelleher but his 18 yarder was well over. The a good Leeside move, involving O'Brien and Dunlea, ended with a penalty box header by O'Brien towards Frank Horgan but he lost his footing as he turned to shoot.
The pace continued to quicken and in the next minute it was Coachford's turn. Buckley left O'Connor for dead on the end line and pulled the ball back to the incoming Deccie Murphy but he drive wide from a great position. Two minutes later, Buckley set up skipper Denis Ring for a powerful shot on the turn, a shot that wasn't too far away.
Shortly afterwards, the first signs of a weakening in the Coachford team became apparent and they had three players booked for silly offences. But Leeside didn't really get the upper hand until the first period of extra time. They should have won the contest then. O'Connor's pass from the left into the box was flicked past the advancing Murphy by O'Sullivan but it also went outside the goal.
The same combination was involved in Leeside's next chance. O'Connor's brilliant breakthrough on the left touchline ended with an accurate pass to O'Sullivan. His header was pushed against the far post by the scrambling keeper who recovered quickly to kill the loose ball. The second period saw Coachford successfully slow the game down and take the tie to the shootout.
The keepers were the key figures here. Leeside's Denis McCarthy gave a hint of what was to come when he got his fingers to Declan Casey's successful spotter, the first in the shootout. The turning point came in the next pair. Coachford keeper Murphy kicked their second but his opposite number made a great dive to his right to
save and Leeside went on to take the cup 4-3.
The trophy was presented to Leeside captain Ray O'Connor by AUL Treasurer John O'Sullivan who praised both teams and both sets of supporters on once again making the County Cup final a great occasion.

This year for the first time in a while we had a Schooolboys Team in the league.
