Pair Annihilation

The production of energy from matter

If an electron and positron, which are almost at rest, are near eachother, they will be attracted and be annihilated. (i.e. They will cancel eachother out)

Their matter disappears and energy is produced.

Two photons of equal energy, moving in opposite directions are produced.

Mathematically:

equation

Similarly, any particle will annihilate its anti-particle, producing energy, if they meet.
