So
why not give Track Racing a go? This increasingly
popular sport in Ireland has seen riders from
other disciplines including road racers, mountain-bikers
and tri-athletes realising its benefits to
supplement their training and hone their racing
skills. Riding a fixed gear bike can improve your
strength, speed, power and pedal stoke and
training and racing are carried out in a safe and
controlled environment with coaching assistance
on hand. It is also great fun with lots of prizes
to be won! With a wide range of different
races being run at race meetings including both endurance
and sprint events, Track Racing affords riders of
all abilities and strengths a chance of
winning. Being conducted in an enclosed environment
also makes Track Racing a very entertaining and
sociable sport as spectators can view all the
action whilst picnicking and chatting. Whilst
Ireland may still be some way off having its
own indoor velodrome, the imminent re-surfacing
of the Track at Sundrive Road and teaching/changing facilities
can only serve to help ensure its continuing
prominence in Irish Cycling!
No
loose clothing should be worn - shorts or cycling
gear are preferable, runners or Look shoes should
be worn and helmets are essential. Hire bikes
will be available (free for tryout sessions) and
are fitted with the old type Look pedals so
if this type doesn't suit bring your own pedals
and our mechanic will fit them to the hire bike.
Please note that cleats must be in good condition
(nearly new) as pulling your foot out can have
more serious consequences on a fixed wheel than
would normally on a road bike. A Cycling Ireland
Club Licence is the minimum requirement for
tryout sessions, but a Full Racing, or Full Track
Licence is required to race in the League. One
Day Licences will be available for those who wish
to race or for those who are not members of
Cycling Ireland. IVCA Racing Licences are also
acceptable.

TRAINING & RACING TRIPS TO MANCHESTER
VELODROME
Manchester Velodrome on your Doorstep! Whilst
Ireland is still without its own indoor Velodrome,
the Olympic-size Manchester Velodrome is actually
very accessible - it is quite easy to get to and
fit in a good training session within a day-return
trip without costing a fortune! Once newcomers to
the Velodrome get to grips with the 43' bankings
(which comes easily to most after about 15
minutes practice), it can be great fun and also
provides excellent strength training and bike
handling skills for the road. Ryanair and Aer
Lingus both fly directly from Dublin to
Manchester and a one-day travel pass for £4.50
will cover all trains/buses from the Airport to
the Velodrome and back. Stena Line and Irish
Ferries both operate a daily ferry service from
Dublin to Holyhead which is just over 2 hours
drive from Manchester. Supervised public Taster
Sessions are held daily from £8 per hour
including bike hire and it's also possible to 'graduate'
(with a cert) up to Track Skills, Induction and
with full accreditation to Quality Structured
Training (SQT). A Track League is also held on
Tuesday and Friday nights throughout the Winter
& Spring months and accredited Irish riders
are always welcome to participate.
