Our Brent Geese Poems

Our poems were published in the April edition of Wild Ireland Magazine.

We hope you enjoy reading them.

The Brent Geese started coming to our school on the 17th of January 2001.  They visited almost every morning for about two weeks.  We were excited and amazed that such huge flocks visited us to eat the grass in our playground.

We took all the photos with our new Sony Mavica digital camera from the window of our classroom.

This is the information we found out about Brent Geese.  We found out that Brent geese eat grass.  The Brent Geese come from Canada and Greenland in winter and return in late spring to lay eggs.  Brent Geese come in big flocks.  Brent geese are very noisy birds and make a honking noise that sounds like "rronk".  The Brent Geese do not fly in a v-shaped formation.  They fly in large groups.  They make honking noises flying and on the ground.  It is a small dark goose.  It is rarely found away from the coast and nearby farmland.   It eats eel grass.  It is not a very shy goose and you can walk quite close to it.  It is about 56-62cm in length.

This is a picture of a brent goose nest.  We copied this picture from the internet. Click it for an internet link.

Back to Fifth Class

I saw some geese

Up in the sky

They kept on chattering

I wonder why

About something

I wonder what

They were gossiping

An awful lot

Cocoa coloured

Wings were spread

Eating grass

They soon were fed

By Robyn

I turned around

And what did I see

A great big goose

Honking at me

He was very thin

And very loud

His feet were flat

And he was very proud

Honking

Rattling

Whirring noise

Long wings

Flat beaks

Grass eaters

That's the brent geese

by Karen

The noise of the geese with their

honking

rattling

whirring

and chattering

Always annoys me.

by Karen

I saw some geese

High in the sky

They were beautiful

I felt tingly inside

Cocoa coloured

On the breast

Honking

When they came to rest

Wings so long

Straight like a line

I never knew

Geese were so fine

By Rita

I saw some brent geese

Flying high in the sky

To say they weren't beautiful

Would be a huge lie

Cocoa coloured

With speckles on their back

Wings so long

Beaks so flat

by Jennifer

I saw the chattering

Noisy geese

They're huge and brown

And have flat beaks

They flew up

Into the cloudy sky

I looked out the window

As they went by
