The ability to visualise and mentally manipulate three-dimensional
mental images is considered to be an important skill in the design &
technology process. Teachers may consider the use of Virtual Reality
Mark-up Language as a means to produce web-based three-dimensional graphical
models. These can be used to convey knowledge about an artefact or as
an aid to visual thinking. Teachers may also base learning exercises
around such models. There are many Javascript resources on the web which facilitate the
construction of multiple choice-type exercises. The sample included here is concerned with formal modes of graphical
representation, in this instance the concept of an 'elevation' in orthographic
projection. This sample tutorial uses a Macromedia Flash 5.0 animation. It introduces
students to the concept of an 'elevation' view and a 'plan' view. This sample tutorial uses a Macromedia Flash 5.0 animation to introduce
students to basic techniques for producing freehand isometric (three
dimensional) sketches.
