Portfolios Differentiated by Purpose
As a means to fulfil assessment criteria for professional accreditation.
To serve as a catalogue of personal and professional materials.
To serve as a tool in ongoing professional development.
In practice a portfolio will encompass elements of each of the above.

suggests a number of different types of portfolios that may be
developed for a variety of purposes:
- A developmental portfolio demonstrates progress in a range
of work. Materials are selected to show competence and growth as a teacher.
- An employment portfolio has evidence of the teacher's planning
skills and approaches to student assessment.
- Professional development portfolios reflect on the meaning
of good teaching and how one can engage in self improvement.
- Goal-based portfolios focus on goal-related classroom activities.
An accountability factor is present.
- Criteria-based portfolios are used for purposes of accreditation.
