Portfolio Types

Portfolios Differentiated by Purpose

As a means to fulfil assessment criteria for professional accreditation.

To serve as a catalogue of personal and professional materials.

To serve as a tool in ongoing professional development.

In practice a portfolio will encompass elements of each of the above.

Hom suggests a number of different types of portfolios that may be developed for a variety of purposes:

  • A developmental portfolio demonstrates progress in a range of work. Materials are selected to show competence and growth as a teacher.
  • An employment portfolio has evidence of the teacher's planning skills and approaches to student assessment.
  • Professional development portfolios reflect on the meaning of good teaching and how one can engage in self improvement.
  • Goal-based portfolios focus on goal-related classroom activities. An accountability factor is present.
  • Criteria-based portfolios are used for purposes of accreditation.
