What is Broadband and why should it interest you?
Broadband is an always-on internet connection which provides high-speed access for a flat-rate monthly charge.
With broadband, you can use the phone or fax at the same time as you access the internet, since the telephone line isn’t tied up. With broadband, the internet and e-mail are always on and this transforms the experience of using the internet from a frustrating one to an enjoyable one. Surfing the net becomes a pleasure as even complex and graphics-rich sites download virtually instantly. You can download music and animation in seconds – not minutes, and video clips in minutes – not hours. You can receive internet radio and other real-time services without interruption.
Broadband is especially important to businesses. Because it is a flat-rate service, you can predict your communications costs and because it’s always on you will improve your internal and external communications. Employees can work from home with broadband, seamlessly connecting them to the main office. Increasingly, businesses are using broadband to conduct net-meetings or face-to-face meetings using video-conferencing.
The internet is becoming a vital part of the infrastructure of modern economies and will soon be an integral feature of businesses, schools, education, and entertainment. A myriad of tasks are, and will be, enabled via the internet, for example: booking a flight or hotel; managing your finances; reading the news; listening to the radio; researching a school project; downloading music; paying your taxes; shopping on-line; e-mailing; registering for a course, and so on. In particular, the internet is becoming a necessity rather than a luxury for many businesses.
One of the barriers to the growth of the internet at
home has been the slowness of telephone connections to the internet. Broadband eliminates this problem and consequently internet use can be expected to accelerate. Not only does broadband give high-speed access to the internet, but it also is required for an increasing number of technologies and services, such as internet telephony. Access to broadband effectively defines the “digital divide”, with the richer economies and regions having higher levels of broadband access, higher Internet penetration, and higher numbers of computers.
