  • Paddy's Pub Gig Review (Q Magazine 2 29/03/03)

    Place:Paddy's Pub, Ballymahon
    Date: 17th March 2003

Setlist: Monsters in a Parasol, Desert Song Song 2,Lost Days, Under the Bridge, Awake, Aneurysm, Bullet with I Can't believe it's not Butterfly Wings

Madness madness and more words that mean madness. That's how I'd describe this Paddy's Day Festival. These young people today are a disgrace.

I was gonna write a proper gig review but to hell with it. I'll describe some of the madness, this is my website I can do whatever I want.

Firstly I'd like to salute all those Wicklow/Wexford (or somewhere down that direction beginning with "W", maybe it was Waterford) hardy boys who bought off license drink to save money and drank it outside. All hail the big spenders.

I also have to give a big shout out to Crowd surfing debutant Tommin Daly who took his maiden voyage on the first night of the Festival. He'd be in his forties so it's a sign that you're never too late to pick up a great new hobby. We wish Tommin a speedy recover and hope that the hip replacement went well.

Lastly I have to mention the punk who fell asleep on the footpath outside the pub and was told to "Get up outta that" by one of The Pigs, The Fuzz, The Plod. He was very much out of it. I think he had been drinking. In fact, he probably had a little bit too much. I tried to help out before the fuzz arrived by giving him a friendly kick in the stomach. But it was not good.

And now, to quote Forest Gump: "That's all I've got to say about that".
    Bye

Eamonn Doran's Review (No Ego Fanzine 2 17/03/03)

    Place:Eamonn Doran's, Temple Bar, Dublin
    Date: 16th February 2003

Setlist: Lost Days Last Nite, Just,Awake Dreaming of You,The Desert Song, Last Nite, Fallen Whispers Song 2,Blah blah Aneurysm

Russia’s Vostok Station in the Antartic is the coldest habited place on earth. Eamonn Doran’s is a close second. Doran’s bar staff removed our empties so promptly, that I never got the chance to see if I could cut glass with my nipples. But they were very, very hard and it was very, very cold but could The Hoodlums warm up this dingy dungeon?

At 9:30 shadowy shapes appear onstage. Discounting Tangstock, where they played on a cattle trailer, this is their first gig up on a real stage. Nervously they assume positions.

Opener “Lost Days” calms them with its simple distorted intro. Nirvana like in structure and dynamics, it bounces along with a catchy beat and seems the strongest track on new EP “Death of the Moustache”.

Sombre and reflective, “Fallen Whispers” demonstrates The Hoodlums grasp of Melody. It’s a bit of a lighter waver and needs more time to endear itself. Unlike new song “Blah Blah” which is a curious concoction of influences, which combine to create The Hoodlums most original offering.

A four note riff and a couple of teasing drum beats introduce “Awake” which feature muted riffage and a choppy beat not unlike The Coral.

In their final song “The Desert Song” singer Colm Coffey laments being “Caught by the Desert’s net”, in an obvious reference to the years he spent roaming the vast dusty plains of South Longford. Luckily for us, Colm’s roaming days are behind him and after a dreamy chilli-pepperish opening, the bridge gallops along and he roars an uplifting chorus about fighting adversity.

In the end it proofed no sweat for The Hoodlum’s debut in the capital, in fact the only people sweating in this ‘fridge with a stage’ were four bouncer-evading Hoodlums fans who’s ID’s were so dodgy, there’s a tribunal starting next week to investigate them. Tune into www.thehoodlums.com to keep up with the band and the tribunal’s progress. (JT)

Paddy's Pub show review (NME 31/12/02)

    Place:Paddy's Pub
    Date: 23 December 2002

Setlist: Last Nite, Just, Teenage Kicks, Kryptonite, Under the Bridge, Dreaming of You,The Desert Song, By the Way, Hitchin a Ride, Lost Days, Made of Stone, No One Knows, Song 2, Aneurysm, Bullet with Butterfly Wings

The poppy bounce of The Stroke's "Last Nite" proofed an excellent gig opener with all in attendance. It confirmed to those who had heard The Hoodlums before, and the newcomers that this was not to be a night of noise, shouting and some more noise. Singer Colm Coffey seems to have perfected Casablanca's growl while drummer Paddy McCormac kept the walls vibrating with the song's catchy beat.

"Last Nite" was followed by Radiohead's "Just", the classic Undertones hit,"Teenage Kicks" and the less farmiliar but no less catchy "Kryptonite" from U.S. band Three Doors Down.

Red Hot Chilli Pepper's masterpiece "Under the Bridge" soon followed, with some lighter waving, but ended abruptly after superfan Troy Egan's Beard, Eddie Keenan's hair and somebody's hairy hands caught alight.

After a short delay, The Coral's MTV 2 favourite "Dreaming of You" and it's "Greasy" bass line got a warm reception as did "By the Way" and the Green Day song "Hitchin a Ride".

Squeezed in between those songs, was "The Desert Song" making it's debut and after conning the crowd with it's downbeat opening it soon kicked into life and started toes tapping once again. After a couple more covers, the hoodlums pulled out another catchy original in the shape of "Lost Days". Both these originals will feature on the forthcoming demo Death of the moustache

Stone Roses Classic "Made of Stone", the powerful Queens of the Stone age song "No one knows" and Blur's "Song 2" were blasted out and got nods of appreciation from the large crowd in attendance.
The night finished with two beastly nineties rockers, Nirvana's "Aneurysm" and The Smashing Pumpkins "Bullet with Butterfly Wings".

Eamon Kernan's Pub, Livestock 2 Review (Hot Press 28/07/02)

    Place:Eamon Kiernab's,Longford
    Date: 20 July 2002

Setlist: Found that Soul,New Born,Fell in love with a girl,Feel good hit of the summer

As part of the livestock 2 event, The Hoodlums made their Longford debut, with Gareth on full singing duties after the departure of Gordon Reilly to pursue a solo career as an American Country music star under the new name of "Sandy Sawyers".

After dedicating the Manic Street Preacher's song "Found that Soul" to Sandy, The Hoodlums then took on and beat Muse's epic "New Born" with a big stick. Detroit duo The White Stripe's "Fell in love with a girl" powered along with ease soon after.

The short set was concluded with a bang with Queen's of the Stone Age's cleverly titled "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" which provoked some drunken crowd surfing and much rowdiness.

Gordon Reilly's Front Garden Show review (Rolling Stone Magazine 13/4/02)

    Place:Reilly's in Tang
    Date: April 2002

Setlist: Plug in Baby.....then the gaurds arrived because of complaints about noise but that wasn't all...

B-B-Busted by the Fuzz. It was unbelievable. The first rock concert in The Federal Republic of Tang since the fall of the Ballymahon Wall and five minutes into the Gig and the coppers descend from everywhere. Hard Rocker's, Hippies, Nudists, Farmers all beaten with truncheon's. The rockers tried to fight back, hurling paper cups but it was to no avail. The SWAT team moved in and they were thrown to the ground.

A helicopter could be seen overhead with the logo "CNN News" on the side as the fight spiralled into a riot. The army were call out after the Nudist Men started lighting bits of Chest hair and hurling them at the SWAT teams.

You think "Gangs of New York" was bad, you should have seen this gig, it was carnage. The Army (wearing fire proof clothing) were not afraid of the flying chest hair and moved in on the nudists, giving savage blue-tits, I sometimes still hear their howls of pain late at night.

The Farmers attacked with a Massey Ferguson 135 but they were blown away by an army tank, the stench of burning wellies hung in the air like a fart in a wardrobe.

Suprisingly it was the hippies who hung on longest, hiding behind a colourful flowerbed and concocting a smoke bomb using an Ivomec 3000 bottle, a piece of bailing twine and a newborn lamb. In a flash the smoke bomb went off, and the hippies tore off on their bicycles yelling "Long live Rock n' Roll" as they scrambled across the border and into the safety of Democratic Republic of Drumraney.
