Pearses Seniors Footballers just lost out to Strokestown in this years O’Rourke Cup Final last Friday night in Ballyforan (see match report). It was a heart breaking defeat as Pearses had come back from the brink to almost snatch a draw but unfortunately a free in the 7th minute of injury time won it for Strokestown. This was a tough way to end a long season in which a lot of effort was put in by the players and the management team of Mike Dolphin and Pat Ryan, selectors Mossy Collins and Brendan Clogher and everyone who helped out with the team especially Mike Naughton, John Duffy and Jimmy Hardiman.

The U-16 footballers produced a brave display in losing to a strong Castlerea side in a very exciting League Final last Sunday morning in Fuerty. In a tough game played at a very fast pace the sides went in at half time level at 0-6 apiece. The second half was very exciting but unfortunately Pearses just lost out at the end. It was a very good year for this team who narrowly lost out in two finals but as most of them are eligible for next year they can be proud of the way they played this year. The club would like to thank the management team of Pat Daly and Mick Feehily for their efforts this year. Best for Pearses were Shane Dolan, Arran Fehily, Shane Mulvey, Cathal Dolphin, Alan Naughton, Niall Daly and U-14 goalkeeper David Donnellan who stepped in for regular goalkeeper Owen Clogher who was unfortunately injured.

Ladies Minor Football Shield Semi-Final:
Pearses 4-10 Kilmore 2-8:
Pearses Minor Ladies had a good win over Kilmore in
the semi-final of the
Minor Shield Competition in Oran on Sunday last.
Pearses opened the game
strongly and had some good scores from Deirdre
Sweeney and Jennifer Downey.
Pearses were playing with the wind and built up a
good lead before half
time. Some excellent defending in that half by Katie
Moran and Carmel
Killeen combined with some fine saves by Ashling
Curley kept the Kilmore
scoring to a minimum. At half time Pearses led 4-7
to 1-4.
Playing into a stiff wind in the second half Pearses
had to work hard to
keep ahead of the opposition. Lisa Mannion covered a
lot of ground helping
out the defence from her midfield spot. All of the
subs introduced
contributed to the effort and Pearses were happy to
come away with a victory
on the scoreline 4-10 to 2-8. This was a very good
team performance and
Pearses now play St Dominics in the final which will
be played on Sat/Sun
next.
Your support for the team in the final wouldbe
appreciated.

Ladies Minor Football (05/11/2006):
Pearses 3-7 Kilglass Gaels 4-7 :
Pearses Minor Ladies were beaten by Kilglass in the opening match of this years 9 a-side minor championship in Kilglass on Saturday. Pearses travelled with the minimum number of players and fatigue really showed in the second half. This was a very good display and the team were unlucky not to come away with at least a share of the spoils. Team: Ashling Curley, Helen Kenny, Carmel Killeen, Emma Ryan, Lisa Mannion, Jennifer Downey, Kelly Fitzgibbon, Deirdre Sweeney, Elizabeth Daly.

Senior Football O’Rourke Cup Semi-Final (30/10/2006):
Pearses 0-11 Castlerea 0-8.
The Paul Flynn sponsored Pearses Senior Football team produced a fine display to qualify for their second senior football final this year. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze Pearses dominated the opening half and were not flattered by the half time score of 0-6 to 0-3. As expected Castlerea came back strongly in the second half and were awarded a late penalty which would have left the bare minimum between the sides but fortunately for Pearses it was missed and Pearses went on to secure a final spot against Strokestown.
Best for Pearses were Padraic Kelly, John White and Damien Donnellan, Aidan Fallon and Declan Duffy in defence, David Moran in midfield Ja Egan and man of the match Paul Moran in the forward line.
U-16 League Semi-Final:

Pearses 2-3 St Dominics 0-3.
The Finnerty sponsored Pearses Junior Camogie team added the Junior Hurling championship to the U-16 and minor county titles in a tough encounter at Woodmount on Saturday last. Aided by the breeze Pearses struck a crucial blow when ‘lady of the match’ Deirdre Sweeney scored a crucial goal midway through the first half to send Pearses into a 1-2 to 0-2 interval lead. With Dominics piling on the pressure Pearses broke away and a Helen Kenny goal helped see Pearses home. Best for Pearses were goalkeeper Cathy Glennon, in defence Mary Dolan and Carmel Killeen, midfield Eilish Kelly and Aoife McDonnell, and in the forwards Stephi Carty and Deirdre Sweeney.
The team was:
Cathy Glennon, Katie Moran, Mary Dolan(c), Christina Dolan, Lisa Killeen, Catriona Carty, Carmel Killeen, Eilish Kelly, Aoife McDonnell, Stephi Carty, Michelle Ryan, Deirdre Sweeney (1-3), Helen Kenny(1-0) , Natasha Beegan, Aine Hogan, subs: Erica Connolly, Emma Ryan, Olivia Sweeney, Tara McDonnell, Linda Sweeney.
Pearses would like to thank the players and the management team of Padraig Dooley, Patty Ward and Belinda Dooley for their fine efforts this year.
Junior A Mid South Football Championship Semi-Final:
Pearses 0-9 Creggs 2-11:
A depleted Junior A side travelled to Fuerty last Saturday evening and put up a brave display before going down to a strong Creggs team. Pearses competed well but two soft goals one in each half knocked the stuffing out of the team. Best for Pearses were goalkeeper Pat Muleady, defenders Kevin Flynn and David Crehan, midfielders Dermot Hardiman and Cathal Kelly and Peadar Glennon and Colin Murray in the forwards.

Senior Ladies Championship Final.
Pearses 1-5 St Bridgets 1-8:
Many commiserations to The Oliver Brooks Carpentry sponsored Senior Ladies Football team who narrowly lost out to St Bridgets last Sunday (see match report). Losing a County Final is always tough but we are sure the team can come back next year and go one better.
The full Pearses Panel was: Natasha Beegan, Ursula Brooks, Catriona Carty, Steffi Carty, Carol Costello, Suzanne Costello, Ashling Creighton, Elizbeth Daly, Mary Dolan, Aoife Dolphin, Jenny Downey, Eilish Finneran, Aine Hogan, Eilish Kelly, Olivia Keogh, Carmel Killeen, Lisa Mannion, Tara McDonnell, Katie Moran, Sinead Raftery, Emma Ryan, Michelle Ryan.
Minor Camogie Final:
Congratulations to managers Patty and Belinda and the rest of the team on their recent County championship success against Four Roads.
Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final Replay (02/10/2006):
Pearses 2-15 Oran 3-6
A fine second half display saw the KCR sponsored Pearses defeat a gallant Oran in a hard fought replay in Athleague last Sunday. On an ideal day for hurling Oran got off to a flying start with a goal from Adrian Kelly in the first minute flicked into the net from a Gerry Fallon free, then after 19 minutes with the score at 1-1 to 0-2 Pearses took the lead after a Shane Sweeney free found Adrian Sweeney and he turned to score a fine goal. The first half half ebbed and flowed and with Pearses leading by 1-5 to 1-3, Oran produced another Adrian Kelly goal identical to the first one followed by a point to leave the half time score 2-4 to 1-5 in Oran’s favour. Pearses dominated the third quarter and aided by some superb free taking from Shane Sweeney edged ahead. The pivotal moment came after a fine run from Sweeney found Cathal Kelly who struck a superb goal from 30 yards to leave the score 2-11 to 2-5. But Oran are a dogged outfit and a goal and a point from 2 frees from Gerry Fallon reduced the margin to two points, but Pearses’s heads never dropped and they scored the final four points to see them through to Sunday weeks final against Athleague. This was a fine all round team performance from Pearses whose scorers were Cathal Kelly (1-2), Teddy Galvin(0-2), Aidan Sweeney(1-1) and Shane Sweeney(0-10 (0-7 frees).
Senior Football O’Rourke Cup Semi-Final:
Pearses 2-6 Castlerea 1-9:
The Paul Flynn sponsored Senior footballers played out a hard fought draw in tough conditions last Saturday evening in Fuerty. Both sides took a long time to settle down and we had to wait until the tenth minute before Castlerea opened the scoring with a point and a goal in the space of a minute. Pearses produced their best spell of play after this with a goal and a point from Paul Moran and two points from Sean Fahey but Castlerea soon drew level, Pearses finished the half strongly and another Paul Moran goal saw Pearses into a 2-4 to 1-3 half time lead. A Sean Fahey point in the 32nd minute saw Pearses extend their lead to five, but they failed to score in the next 25 minutes as Castlerea drew level helped by some fine Ger Heneghan points, a Sean Fahey point saw Pearses take the lead again but Castlerea soon equalised and the game ended in a draw. Best for Pearses were Damien Donnellan, Padraig Kelly, Paul Kelly. Paul Moran and Sean Fahey.
Minor Camogie Final:
Pearses 2-2 Four Roads 1-2:
Congrats to our U-18 team who won the A county final on Saturday last in Woodmount.
This was a very proud and historic moment for the Club. There were tears of joy and relief on the steps of the stand to match the downpour outside. Captain Deirdre Sweeney received the Brid Cox Memorial Cup from Christina Doyle, County Board chairperson. Carmel Killeen received the player of the match award after putting in a five star performance. The game was played in wet and windy conditions, every ball was contested with vigour and determination with the game proving to be a most memorable one.
Sara Glynn had a super game between the posts with a number of fine saves and came off her line to make many vital interceptions. Full back, Katie Moran, had a solid game and gave great cover. Erica Connolly, Carmel Killeen and Emma Ryan were tremendous as a unit with Carmel Killeen playing a pivotal role and deservedly receiving player of the match.
Midfielder, Aoife McDonnell, Lisa Killeen and Christina Dolan dominated for much of the game and gave quality ball to our forwards. The 3 Sweeney sisters, Olivia, Lynda and Captain Deirdre tormented and stretched the Four Roads defence. Full forward Helen Kenny showed well for the ball and finished with 2 excellent goals.
Well done to all the girls involved, Siobhan, Melissa, Sandra, Amy, Rebecca, Lizzy, Breda, Orla, Paula, Karen, Shauna and Triona.
Many thanks to our main sponsors, The Finnerty Brothers, Sean and Tommy, and to our Club Catering Committee, Joan, Ann Marie, Vera, Sean, Eileen and Mary. who worked so hard all day providing food for all.
Thanks to all the club members who helped out on the day, Mary D., Michelle, Mary K, Emmett, Kealan and Cormac. Eilish (video) and Rose. To all our supporters who turned up in large numbers and all parents for support all year.
Thanks to Colm and Mícháel for having the pitch in fine condition despite having accommodated 5 games earlier in the Veronica Connolly Memorial Cup.
A special thanks to the panel for their commitment to training all year. To Team Management, Padraig and Belinda, for all their hard work and dedication.
Minor Football Championship Quarter Finals:
Pearses 0-15 Eire Og 1-4:
Pearses Minor footballers had a fine victory over a good Eire Og team last Sunday in Woodmount. Pearses started well and dominated proceedings in the first half to lead 0-9 to 0-2. Despite conceding a penalty early in the second half Pearses held out for a comfortable victory. This was a fine all round team performance that will put them in good heart for the semi-final against Clan na Gael.
Senior Ladies Championship Semi-Final.
Pearses 1-10 Clan na Gael 0-6:
The Oliver Brooks Carpentry sponsored senior team recorded a good win in the semi final of the Championship over neighbours Clan na Gael on Wednesday night last in Johnstown. Pearses started strongly and had some good scores from Steffi Carty and Jenny Downey. At midfield Eilish Kelly and Ashling Creighton dominated the game for long stages and Pearses finished well. Overall this was a good team performance and particularly from younger players Carmel Killeen in defence and Tara McDonnell and Lisa Mannion in attack.
Pearses now play St Bridgets (holders) in the County final on Sunday next (please check fixtures for details) and are hoping to go one better than last year.
The full Pearses Panel is: Natasha Beegan, Ursula Brooks, Catriona Carty, Steffi Carty, Carol Costello, Suzanne Costello, Ashling Creighton, Elizbeth Daly, Mary Dolan, Aoife Dolphin, Jenny Downey, Eilish Finneran, Aine Hogan, Eilish Kelly, Olivia Keogh, Carmel Killeen, Lisa Mannion, Tara McDonnell, Katie Moran, Sinead Raftery, Emma Ryan, Michelle Ryan
.
Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final (24/09/2006):
Pearses 1-12 Oran 2-9
Pearses and Oran played out a hard fought and exciting draw in Athleague last Sunday. On an ideal day for hurling Pearses took a long time to settle down, a poor first half saw Oran score the first 3 points of the game and it was not until the 20th minute that Pearses scored their first point from a Shane Sweeney free the first of seven which ultimately kept Pearses in the game throughout. Half time saw Pearses leading by 0-5 to 0-4. Two further points stretched Pearses lead to three but then a goal form Francie Quine and three further points allowed Oran to take a three point lead, Pearses responded with a point and then a Robbie Donoghue goal after good work by Teddy Galvin put Pearses back in front, then disaster struck with Quine getting his second goal followed by another point saw Pearses 3 points down with only 4 minutes remaining, but they rallied well and earned a draw with a fine Cathal Kelly point. In the end a draw was a fair result. Best for Pearses were Padraig Dolan, Alan Loughnane, Pat Downey, Mícheál Flynn, Robbie Donoghue and Teddy Galvin.
The U-16 footballers produced a brave display but just cane up short against a more experienced Castlerea side last Saturday in Hyde Park. After an even first twenty minutes Pearses took the lead when a great pass by Alan Naughton found Aaron Fehily who coolly slotted the ball home to give Pearses the lead but two points form Castlerea left the score 1-2 to 0-5 at half time. Castlerea continued to dominate after the break and went into an 0-11 to 1-2 lead and Pearses looked doomed. But a strong rally saw Pearses close within a point including having a Thomás Sweeney goal disallowed but Castlerea recovered and scored the final two points and end Pearses hopes of success. The good thing from Pearses point of view is that the majority of the side will be eligible next year. Best for Pearses were Alan Naughton, Jason Clogher, Alan Mannion, Shane Mulvey, Owen Clogher, and Jason Murray.
The U-16 footballers produced a resilient display to score a narrow victory over a fine St Kieran’s side last Friday night in Ballyforan. Pearses were behind 0-9 to 0-3 at half time but recovered to level the game but four points from Kierans saw them lead by 0-13 to 2-3 with 6 minutes to play and things were looking bleak for Pearses but a strong finish aided by a late goal from Alan Mannion saw Pearses book a date for next weeks final against Castlerea. Best for Pearses were Alan Naughton , Alan Mannion, Shane Mulvey, Cathal Dolphin, Stephen McManus and Niall Daly.
Best for Kierans were Enda O’Rourke, Aidan Bannon, Niall Kilroy and Alan Moore.
Senior Football Championship Relegation play off:
Pearses 0-17 Boyle 1-8.
Pearses travelled to Athleague last Sunday and despite some anxious moments ran out comfortable winners against a gallant Boyle outfit. A scrappy first half saw Pearses lead narrowly at half time by 0-6 to 0-3, helped by some good points from Mike Duignan and Sean Fahey. Boyle started the second half strongly and a 40th minute goal saw them take the lead but Pearses responded well to run out comfortable winners. Best for Pearses were Damien Donnellan, John White, Sean Fahey and Mike Duignan. Although the championship is over Pearses can still win the O’Rourke Cup so there is still a lot to play for this season.
The U-16 footballers produced another great display with a comfortable victory over Eire Og last Friday in Woodmount. Pearses were always in control throughout the game and never looked in danger. Best for Pearses were Alan Naughton , James Kelly, Conor Downey, Paul and Jason Clogher.
U-15 Hurling Final:
Pearses 2-4 v Athleague/Tremane 4-8
Pearses U-15 hurling team put up a brave display against a very strong Athleague/Tremane team in Woodmount last Wednesday evening. The scoreline flattered the visitors with Pearses 5 points behind at the break the lads responded well to close within 1 point of Athleague/Tremane but with Pearses putting on the pressure their opponents broke downfield to score a goal which swung the game in the visitors favour. Best for Pearses were Aaron Fehily, Niall Tumilty, Shane Dolan, Niall Daly and Darragh McCormack.
Junior A Football Championship:
A depleted Pearses Junior football team were beaten by a strong Fuerty team last Saturday in Woodmount. Pearses didn’t make enough use of a strong breeze in the first half and were trailing by 0-1 to 0-4 when Fuerty converted a penalty on the stroke of half time to give them a flattering 6 point lead. Pearses started the second half well and a fine goal from Peadar Glennon cut the deficit to three but Fuerty finished the stronger and ran out easy winners. Best for Pearses were Damien Blackwire, Eoin Egan, and David Crehan.
Senior Hurling Championship:
Congratulations to Pearses Senior Hurling team who topped the League Section and will now play either Oran or St Dominics in the semi-final on the 24th of September.
The U-16 footballers produced a great display last week against a strong Castlerea team. With Alan Naughton and Niall Daly dominating midfield Pearses created plenty of chances to run out easy winners. Others to shine in an outstanding team display were Cathal Dolphin, Shane Mulvey, Sean Ryan and Jason Clogher.
Pearses would like to congratulate Niall Carty and the Roscommon minors on their magnificent win last Sunday against Meath.
The seniors footballers were well beaten by Western Gaels in the championship play off on Sunday evening in Hyde Park. This was a desparately disappointing display by Pearses after a season of much promise. Pearses aided by a strong breeze started brightly and lead by 6 points to 2 after 20 minutes with some fine scores from Sean Fahey and Ja Egan, but then disaster struck when Pearses conceded a soft goal which lifted Western Gaels. The sides went in at half time level 0-8 to 1-5 and it wasn’t till the 41st minute that Western Gaels took the lead and they dominated from there on in to run out easy winners in the end. Pearses play Boyle next in the relegation play offs and can still salvage their season in the O’Rourke Cup.
Team: Padraic Dolan, David Loughnane, Alan Sweeney, Sean Donoghue, Alan Loughnane, Micheal Flynn, Kenneth Glynn, Michael Donoghue, Pat Downey, Cathal Kelly, Ollie Dolan, Leo Flynn, Padraic Galvin, Christy Sweeney, Shane Sweeney. Subs: Aidan Sweeney, Robert Donoghue, David Sweeney.
Padraig Pearses suffered there first defeat of this years Senior Hurling Championship as Four Roads took the spoils at a windswept Pairc an Piarsaigh. It was tit for tat in the opening moments with Four Roads hitting the front and Pearses equalising with a fine Kenneth Glynn point. However as the half progressed Four Roads began to take control, and despite Pearses’ best efforts they goaled midway through the first half. The home side trailed by seven points at the break and despite several good chances at the start of the second half Pearses didn’t look threatening. They were reduced to fourteen men ten minutes into the second half and it saw them burst into life. Robert Donoghue began to assert himself at centre field and Leo Flynn who was introduced just before half time was hurling with gusto. It was Flynn’s ball to Tomas Seale, which was pointed, that set the ball rolling. Seale came alive adding another two goals in five minutes to bring Pearses right back into the game. Unfortunately the numerical advantage began to tell and Four Roads notched a goal and two points to swing the game in their favour again. Pearses were unable to respond and the seven point winning margin flattered Four Roads somewhat. Pearses struggled to find any rhythm for long periods and will be disappointed with the manner of the defeat. However the showed flashes of promise and despite the need for improvement they will relish the upcoming fixtures in the championship. Conditions were never ideal for fluent hurling and both sides struggled to cope at times.
Team: Padraic Dolan, Micheal Flynn, Alan Sweeney, Sean Donoghue, John Galvin, Alan Loughnane, Kenneth Glynn, Michael Donoghue, Shane Sweeney, Aidan Sweeney, Robert Donoghue, Christy Sweeney, Padraic Galvin, David Loughnane, Tomas Seale. Subs: Leo Flynn, Ollie Dolan.
A special mention is due to Mícheál Grenham and Colm Green for the fine manner in which the grounds were prepared for the games.
The u/14 footballers were beaten by a strong Gaels team on Friday evening last in Hyde Park. The pearses lads fought hard all through the game with R.Kildae D.Murray A.Butler and C. Grehan playing well in defence E. Dohoghue and E. Kelly never gave up in midfield and P. Corbett, S. Carty and D. Flynn doing well in attack but the Gaels were just too strong on the day.
Panel: D. Donnellan, R. Kildea, A. Butler, L. Hynes, C. Grehan, C. Fitzgibbon, D. Murray, E. Donoghue, E. Kelly, S. Carty, M. Kenirons (0-1), D. Flynn, S. Blackwier, P. Corbett(1-1), S. O'Rourke, K. Feehilly (0.2), A. Scott, G. Egan, K. Gavin, T. Cogavin, A. Phelan.
The management and players would once again like to thank Brendan Kildea for his generous sponsorship of this team during the year.
Junior Football Tansy Cup:
Pearses1-17 Kilmore 0-4.
Pearses junior footballers had an easy victory over an understrength Kilmore side last Wednesday evening in Woodmount. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze Pearses took a long time to settle and after several wides they finally began to put some fine passages of play together and a goal from Paul Duke helped put Pearses into a 1-11 to 0-2 half time lead. Pearses continued to dominate in the second half and held out for a very comfortable win. Best for Pearses were Sean Kelly, Gerry Kelly, Peadar Glennon and Paul Duke.
Senior Football Championship (23/07/06):
Pearses 0-8 Western Gaels 1-9:
Pearse’s senior footballer’s unbeaten record came to an abrupt end with a disappointing performance away to Western Gaels in Frenchpark last Saturday evening. Always second best throughout Pearses still had every chance as they were fortunate to be only trailing by 0-4 to 0-3 at half time. Disapointingly Pearses performance in the second half didn’t improve and the sending off of Enda Barrett meant they were always going to be up against it.
This was a bad day for Pearses who can play a lot better. As was the case last year, a poor start to the campaign, but the team is good enough to turn it around, but a major improvement in performance is needed if they are to progress.

Flynn and M Kenirons(2) but in the second half Pearses upped their game and early goals from C. Daly and P Corbett laid the foundations for a comprehensive victory. Best for Pearses were A Butler, D Murray in defence, Ml Kenirons and E Donoghue in midfield, P Corbett, S Blackweir and C Daly in attack, but man of the match was C Fitzgibbon who led from centre back setting up numerous scores.

Padraig Pearses had a disappointing defeat in the Junior Hurling Championship to St. Dominics at Knockrockery on Tuesday evening. On a very breezy but dry evening Pearses were the main architects of their own downfall with some wayward shooting. In truth they were the better side for many stretches of the game and were dominating particularly at midfield where Robert Aherne and Aidan Sweeney hurled supremely well. However a couple of early wides sapped the confidence of the forwards and despite having all the possession Pearses were behind by a couple of points midway through the first half. A goal by St Dominics put them further in arrears but Brian Burns capitalised on a mix up in the Dominics defence to goal for Pearses which left them three points behind at the break with the benefit of the wind to come. Yet the second half followed the pattern of the first with Pearses shooting wide after wide. Tomas Seale steadied the ship with a point and Niall Flynn added another soon after but Dominics got a superb goal from a first time pull on the ball to damage Pearses prospects further. Pearses still dominated much of the play but could not find the target or engineer a goal chance that might have turned the match their way. The signs were very positive for the Woodmount men if they can solve the scoring issue particularly the performances of some of the younger members of the team. Team: Enda Colleran, Jimmy Donoghue, Sean Donoghue, Cathal Duffy, David Dolan, Kenneth Glynn, Liam Dolan, Aidan Sweeney, Robert Aherne, Brian Burns, Keelan Daly, Shane Berrigan, Niall Flynn, Tomas Seale, David Sweeney. Subs Used: John Mulvihill, Mike Flynn, Padraig Dooley
Senior Football (09/07/06):
Padraig Pearses 1-8 Strokestown 0-10:
Padraig Pearses continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought victory away to Strokestown in poor conditions last Saturday evening. Playing against a strong breeze Pearses went in 0-8 to 0-3 behind at half time but a Michael Finneran goal 10 minutes into the second half swung the game Pearses way and they held on for a narrow victory. Best for Pearses were Damien Donnellan and Padraig Kelly in defence, Paul Moran in midfield, Ollie Brooks and Sean Fahey in the forward line. The result guarantees that Pearse’s make it through to the semi-finals.
Padraig Pearses 1-14 St Dominics 2-8:
Padraig Pearses made it 3 wins out of three with a hard fought victory over St Dominics in Athleague last Sunday. Pearses started slowly but began to dominate and despite six wides led by 0-6 to 0-2 after 25 minutes but a penalty for Dominics meant that there was just the minimum between them at half time with Pearses leading 0-7 to 1-3. Dominics made a great start to the second half and scored a goal and a point which meant Pearses were three points behind. The turning point came in the 38th minute when with just one point in it Padraic Galvin scored a fine goal following good work from Cathal Kelly. Kelly, Galvin and Shane Sweeney added further scores to see Pearses home. Best for Pearses were Sean Donoghue, John Galvin and Michael Flynn in defence, Shane Sweeney in midfield and Padraic Galvin and Cathal Kelly in the forwards.
Team: Padraic Dolan, Leo Flynn, Alan Sweeney, Sean Donoghue, John Galvin, Alan Loughnane, Kenneth Glynn, Michael Donoghue, Shane Sweeney(0-8, 0-5f’s), Cathal Kelly(0-3), Robert Donoghue, Aidan Sweeney, Padraic Galvin (1-3), Tomas Seale, David Loughnane. Subs: Michael Flynn, Ollie Dolan.
Under 14 championship:
Padraig Pearses 3-8 Boyle 1-13.
Pearses u-14’s made the long journey to Boyle last Thursday night and came back with a one point victory. Pearses got of to a good start with first half goals by Padraig Corbett and Shane Blackwier helping them into a 2-7 to 0-5 half time lead. Boyle started the second half strongly and levelled the game with 10 mins to go, but a goal from a free and a late point from Padraig Corbett meant Pearses held out for a 1 point win. There were many good displays on the Pearses team, in the backs David Murray, Andrew Phelan and Anthony Butler defended well, Conor Grehan and Eamonn Donoghue played well in midfield and Shane Blackwier, Michael Kenirons and Padraig Corbett were always dangerous.
team - D.Donnelan, R.Kildea, A.Butler, L.Haynes, A.Phelan, C.Fitzgibbon, D.Murray, E.Donoghue, C.Grehan, C.Daly, M Kenirons, D Flynn, S Blackwier, P.Corbett, S.Carty. subs - T.Ryan, K.Feehily, P.Naughton, T.Cogavin, K.Gavin.

Senior Footballers win Leo Kenny Memorial Cup (Connacht League) (25/06/06):
Pearses 2-13 Westport 1-04.
Pearses won the Leo Kenny Memorial Cup with a great performance in Ballyhaunis last Wednesday night. In condititions more akin to the shortest day of the year than the longest, a Westport point started the scoring but a fine Ja Egan goal in the 9th minute after some great build up play put Pearses into a lead they never looked like losing. Pearses continued to dominate with Paul Moran very prominent in midfield and a second goal from Niall Finneran helped Pearses into a 2-6 to 0-3 half time lead. Playing into a strong breeze Pearses continued to excel and scored some excellent points from Sean Fahey, Mike Duignan and Ja Egan. Westport pressed late on but a great save from Brian Croffey helped keep Westport at bay. Pearses played very well from 1 to 15 in what was a tremendous team effort. Well done lads. Also a special thank you to all the supporters who made the long trip to Ballyhaunis it was very much appreciated by the team. The team was Brian Croffey, Padraig Kelly, John Whyte, John Connell, Enda Barrett, Paul Kelly (0-1), Declan Duffy, Pat Connell, Paul Moran, Niall Finneran (1-0), Denis Whyte (0-1), David Moran (0-1,45), Mike Duignan(0-2), Sean Fahey (0-4,(0-2f)), Ja Egan (1-4), subs: Niall Murray, Aidan Ryan, Paul Duke and Brendan Flynn.
Padraig Pearses 1-21 Ballygar 2-14:
Padraig Pearses qualified for the final of the Four Roads Senior Hurling Tournament after a titanic battle with Ballygar in Four Roads on Thursday evening. Pearses were by far the stronger team in the opening half with the defence particularly resolute. After a couple of early missed chances that allowed Ballygar to go into an early lead Pearses settled with some fine scores. Tomas Seale and Cathal Kelly proved the main early scorers and were joined by fine efforts from Aidan Sweeney and Michael Donoghue. Shane Sweeney was deadly accurate from frees and after David Loughnane found the net it looked at half time as if Pearses were in complete control. However Ballygar responded admirably in the second half and began picking off some fine scores. They also cracked home two fine goals and it would have been three except for a fine save from Padraic Dolan. Incredibly despite being well behind at the break Ballygar led with four minutes to go. Brian Burns steadied the ship with two fine points and David Loughnane and Shane Sweeney added further scores to see Pearses victorious. Team: Padraic Dolan, Leo Flynn, Alan Sweeney, Sean Donoghue, John Galvin, Alan Loughnane, Kenneth Glynn, Michael Donoghue, Shane Sweeney, Cathal Kelly, Robert Donoghue, Aidan Sweeney, Padraic Galvin, Tomas Seale, David Loughnane. Subs: Pat Downey, Brian Burns.
Padraig Pearses 0-9 St Bridgets 0-5.
Pearses made it three wins out of three in the championship with a hard fought win over Bridgets in Woodmount on Sunday evening. A poor first half with defences mainly on top saw Pearses go into the interval leading by 0-4 to 0-2. The tricky breeze meant scores were at a premium and when Bridget’s equalized to make the score 0-5 to 0-5 they seemed to be in the ascendancy, but the hard work the team has been putting into training this year paid off as they scored the last four points three of them coming from Paul Duke. Best for Pearses were goalkeeper Brian Croffey whose two late saves were crucial, Sean Kelly, Kevin Flynn, and Damien Blackweir in defence, Ollie Brooks in midfield, Paul Duke and Niall Hogan in the forward line.

Leo Kenny Cup (Connacht League):
Pearses 0-10 Westport 0-10.
A depleted Pearses earned a hard fought draw in a tough game in Hyde Park on Sunday. Despite playing with the wind a nervous Pearses team took a long time to get going and trailed by 04-01 after 20 minutes but a fine spell saw four unanswered points to give them a half time lead of 0-5 to 0-4.
The second half was a seesaw affair with Westport going into the lead on three occasions but to Pearses credit they fought back and lead by 0-9 to 0-8 and 0-10 to 0-9 only for a disputed free gave Westport a draw with the last kick of the game. All in all a draw was a fair result. Best for Pearses were John White, John Connell and Declan Duffy in defence, and Niall Murray who did very well when he came on as substitute in the forward line. The team was Brian Croffey, Aidan Fallon, John Whyte, John Connell, Enda Barrett, Paul Kelly, Declan Duffy (0-1), Pat Connell (0-3,(0-2f)), ), David Moran (0-2,(0-1f, 0-1 45)), Paul Duke, Denis Whyte, Gerry Kelly, Mike Duignan, Ja Egan (0-1), Padraig Kelly, subs Niall Murray (0-2,(0-1f)), Niall Finneran (0-1).

Oran 1-6 1-10 Padraig Pearses.
Pearses recorded their second victory in this years championship with a hard fought win over Oran in Athleague last Sunday. After a close opening quarter Pearses lead by 4 points to 3 thanks to some fine free taking from Shane Sweeney and a good John Galvin point, then David Loughnane scored a fine individual goal to help Pearses into a 1-5 0-3 half time lead. Oran came back into the game with a scrappy goal and pressed for the equalizer but some fine points by Shane Sweeney and in particular a DJ style overhead point from Teddy Galvin saw Pearses home. Best for Pearses were, man of the match Michael Flynn and Pat Downey in defence, and in the forward line Leo Flynn and David Lougnane. Scorers for Pearses were Shane Sweeney 0-6 (0-5 from frees), David Loughnane (1-1), John Galvin, Teddy Galvin and Leo Flynn (0-1 each).

Butler excellent at full back also prominent in the backs were C. Daly and A. Phelan. Midfield held their own and C.Fitzgibbon capped a fine display with 5 points. S. Blackweir and S. Pearses Senior hurlers started this years championship with a win over an out of
form Roscommon Gaels side last Sunday in Athleague. Pearses started brightly and
were helped by a 4th minute goal from Padraig Galvin. Pearses continued to
dominate and aided by some Shane Sweeney frees and a fine Aidan Sweeney goal in
the 21st minute Pearses led by 2-5 to 0-3 at half time. After a fairly even 3rd
quarter Pearses wrapped the game up with a 48th minute Christy Sweeney goal and
a 58th minute Leo Flynn goal ended a fairly one sided affair. Best for Pearses
were Cathal Kelly, Alan Sweeney and Alan Loughnane in defence, Ollie Dolan and
Padraig Galvin in the forwards. The next outing is away to Athleague in
Knockcroghery in two weeks time.

Padraig Pearses 0-18 St Aidans 2-8:
Pearses Senior Footballers continued their 100% record with a fine victory over
St Aidan’s in Ballyforan on Friday night 28th April. Pearses dominated the early
exchanges and with the aid of some superb points from Ja Egan and Niall Finneran
saw Pearses go into the break 0-12 to 0-4 up at half time. After some strong
words in the dressing room St Aidan’s came out fired up for the second half and
soon chipped away at the Pearses lead, 2 goals one from a penalty and suddenly
it was a one point game 0-15 to 2-8 but to Pearses credit they never dropped
their heads and a fine David Moran point followed quickly by two more from
substitute Niall Murray saw Pearses home. This was a fine display form Pearses
with all players contributing well. Best for Pearses were Damian Donnellan and
John Whyte in defence, Pat O’Connell in midfield, and Ja Egan (0-6) who lead the
forward line very well.
Junior A Football Championship:
Padraig Pearse’s 1-9 Kilbride 0-9:
Pearses made it two wins in a row in the Junior A championship with a three
point win in a scrappy game in Kilbride last Saturday night. Pearses played a
lot of their best football in the early stages of the first half against a
strong breeze some good points from Gerry Kelly and Peadar Glennon aided by a
well worked Michael Duignan goal saw the sides level 1-3 to 0-6 at the interval.
A scrappy second half saw Pearses pull away but to Kilbride’s credit they
finished strongly and only for a late Cathal Duffy save Kilbride could have
snatched an equalizer. Best for Peases was cathal Duffy in goals, Sean Kelly,
Kevin Flynn and Eoin Egan in defence, Gerry Kelly in midfield, Michael Duignan
and Peadar Glennon in the forwards.
The Senior Hurlers start their Championship campaign next
Sunday against Roscommon Gaels in Athleague next Sunday good luck to manager

O’Rourke Cup Senior Football:
Padraig Pearses 2-8 Kilbride 1-9:
Pearses Senior Footballers continued their 100% record with a hard fought
victory over Kilbride in a scrappy game in the O’Rourke Cup in Woodmount on
Saturday night, 22nd April. Pearses despite being helped by a strong breeze
started slowly but dominated the second quarter and aided by a Ja Egan goal and
three Sean Fahy points lead by 1-5 to 0-4 points at half time. Some poor wides
and a soft Kilbride goal saw Pearses fall behind in the 50th minute 1-7 to 1-8
and against the breeze we feared the worst but to Pearses credit they finished
the stronger and a David Moran goal and two more Sean Fahy frees aided by a fine
Brian Croffey save saw Pearses home. Best for Pearses were John O’Connell and
John Whyte in defence, Pat O’Connell and David Moran who more than held their
own against a strong Kilbride midfield, and Sean Fahy (0-6, 0-5 frees) and Ja
Egan (1-1) in the forward line.
Pearses continue their campaign next Friday night in Ballyforan against St
Aidans.
Junior A Football Championship:
Padraig Pearse’s 3-9 Roscommon Gaels 1-7:
Pearses got of to a winning start with an eight point win over Roscommon Gaels
in a strange game played in ideal conditions in Ballyforan on Sunday afternoon.
An excellent Gerry Kelly goal after 5 minutes followed by a Niall Hogan goal in
the 12th minute saw Pearses race to a 2-2 to 0-2 lead however some very bad
misses and a Roscommon Gaels goal left the sides with only a goal in it 2-3 to
1-3 at the break. After some stern words and a Gaels point Pearses regained the
upper hand with a third goal from Paul Duke and some fine points notably from
Michael Duignan and Colm Kelly. Pearses eased up after that and allowed Gaels to
dominate the closing stages but good defensive work saw them home. Best for
Peases was Brian Croffey in goals, Damian Blackmire, Declan Duffy and Aidan Ryan
in defence, John O’Connell in midfield, Gerry Kelly, Colm Kelly, Michael Duignan
and Peadar Glennon in the forwards.
The championship continues away to Kilbride next Saturday evening
7.30pm(provisional).

Roscommon U-21 Hurling Final 2005:
Pearses 0-7 Four Roads 1-6
A gallant performance by our u-21 hurlers saw Pearses just come up short in a tight hard fought game at Woodmount last Sunday. Pearses downfall was their inability to take advantage of the strong breeze at their backs in the first half which saw them after hitting several wides leading by only 0-3 to 0-1 at the break all three points coming from Cathal Kelly. Four Roads came charging out for the second half and scored 1-1 in the opening couple of minutes to put them into a 2 point lead and at that stage Pearses supporters feared the worst, but Pearses refused to give in and aided by strong performances from Alan Sweeney and David Loughnane kept them within two points throughout the second half. Pearses pressed hard in the closing stages but despite a number of opportunites just failed to get the winning goal. Hard luck to Tom Costelloe’s charges after a brave effort.
The Pearses team: Padraic Dolan, Robert Barrett, Alan
Sweeney, Jimmy Donoghue, John Mulvihill, David Loughnane, Shane Berrigan, Robert
Ahern, Cathal Kelly, John Paul Dolan, Patrick Egan, Damian Whelan, Tom Kelly,

U-21 Hurling 2005:
Padraig Pearses 3-15 Athleague\Tremane 2-4
Padraig Pearses qualified for the U21 County Final in style after beating
Athleague\Tremane in Knockrockery on Sunday the 5th of March. The Woodmount
team looked fired up for the encounter from the start and after missing an
early free they went ahead when Tomas Seale popped over the games first
point after three minutes. After Cathal Kelly had extended the lead with a
free Pearses rocked their opponents when Tom Kelly capitalised on a
goalmouth scramble to fire home the games first goal. Athleague responded
with a point of their own and despite a succession of points from Seale,
Kelly, David Sweeney and a long range effort from Patrick Egan
Athleague\Tremane found themselves back in the game when Gary Fallon
converted a penalty. This ray of hope lasted just two minutes as a poor
clearance allowed Seale to rifle home his sides second goal and leave them
comfortably in front at the break. Cathal Kelly pointed after the restart
and once Seale had goaled again the result never looked in doubt. The
introduction of Adrian Burns and Shane Whelan added fresh impetus to the
Pearses forwards and with a cluster of points from frees by Cathal Kelly and
minors from David Sweeny and Seale twice Pearses closed out the game. To
their credit Athleague\Tremane never stopped battling and were rewarded with
their second goal of the game late on but it was too little to late. Pearses
defended doggedly and experienced campaigners Alan Sweeney, David Loughnane,
John Mulvihill and Shane Berrigan were aided brilliantly by Jimmy Donoghue
and Robert Barrett in defence and commanded astutely by goalkeeper Padraic
Dolan. Robert Ahern had a storming game at midfield with Cathal Kelly while
the half forward line of Damian Whelan, Patrick Egan and John Paul Dolan
hurled well. With the full forward line contributing 3-7 from play it was a
very successful day for Tom Costello’s charges and they will be hoping for a
repeat performance in the final.

Pearses 1-8 Oranmore 1-7.
Pearses senior footballers got their season off to a winning start with a hard fought 1 point victory on Saturday evening. After a slow start Pearses settled down and a fine goal finished to the net by Paul Moran after a well worked move helped the team to a 1-5 to 0-3 half time lead. A number of changes at the interval seemed to disrupt the team and Oranmore fought back to level despite a fantastic save from second half substitute David Moran in the Pearses goal. Pearses responded well and held on to win by the narrowest of margins. Their were strong performances from John O'Connell in defence, Pat O'Connell and David Moran in midfield, Denis White, Paul Moran and Padraig Kelly in the forwards.
