The Buffalo        
  The buffalo was very important to the native people of the Plains. It could provide for almost all their needs. Its skin or hide provided clothing, footwear, covering for their homes, as well as covering for a very basic boat. It also gave them a plentiful supply of food. Every part of the buffalo was eaten. buffalo

In fact, the Plains Natives found many, many uses for the buffalo. Here are some of them:

Hide:
containers, clothing, head-dresses, medicine bags, shields, buckets, moccasin soles, rattles, drums, drumsticks, ropes, saddles, stirrups, knife cases, belts

Stomach:
container for carrying and storing water, cooking vessel

Tail: whips

Bones:
knives, arrowheads (ribs) , shovels, splints, paint-brushes (hip-bones), game dice

Hair:
head-dresses, saddle pad filler, pillows, ropes, ornaments
