“God made the first man and the first woman,
To look after the world
and one another and to love God”………..
……this is what life is about!
Our
project “Caring for Others “ shows this.
Who
are we?
We are pupils of the Presentation
Convent Primary School Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny. Castlecomer is a small town
with a population of 2,500 people. Most
of the families are natives. One of the main sources of employment for men and
women ‘Comer International’ closed during the year. Presently we have
only one factory – Ormond Brick. Despite that, the people are very
caring and generous and they always respond to a need.
The tradition of caring for others
in our school goes back to the 29th June 1829 when the Presentation
Sisters first came to the parish of Castlecomer. The Penal Laws were over.
Catholics were now free to practice their religion and children were allowed to
attend catholic schools. Coal mining was the chief means of livelihood of many
people in our area. Their families were large and in most cases poor and they
needed teachers. The first school was in the sacristy of the church.
As
a Presentation school we also carry on the tradition of caring started by the
foundress of the Presentation Sisters –Nano Nagle. She was known as ‘the
children’s friend and lover of the poor’.
She lived in the eighteenth century when the great majority of people
were very poor, uneducated, unemployed and hungry.
She responded to the needs of her time and developed an educational
curriculum suitable to the needs of her students.
We
hope that this tradition of caring, which we have received will be passed on for
many generations to come.
