Rock Surname Information Downloads

The following information is given freely, it is collected from various sources, which are indicated where possible. I have simply retrieved this information and presented it in a way to make easy for the Rock(e)(s) searcher to find the information quicker. It is in two formats, Text format and MS Word 2000.  With the MS Word 2000 files I have virus checked these, I would advice you to do the same. If you are nervous about downloading these files, I have also placed them on this page in a zip archive, password protected, if you want the password simply email me.

The documents on this page contain the names, Rock, Rocke, Rocks and Rox, they are extracted from various census and the current [2004] telephone books. They give a comprehensive coverage of the entire island of Ireland, both from the 18thC/19thC and into the 21st C of the name Rock and variations. Most of the material below I have tried where possible to group them by county, some are sorted by year, I have not included a name without an address/location/year.

comparison_of_rock.doc - This document is a comparison of the distribution of Rock variant surnames between the 1850's and the present day. The information is just a useful indicator of where the name occurs, its variants and the counties. The reference material is from the Griffiths valuations, Northern Ireland Telephone Directory and the Republic of Ireland Telephone Directory.

index_to_griffith.doc  & index_to_griffith.txt - The Griffiths Valuation; this is a census substitute for Ireland, the entries in this document are near complete, they are complete for Rock, almost 96% complete for all others. These are holdings/households, they do not indicate how many people are residing in the properties just the titaloes. This is very useful as it would reflect say the modern telephone directories. I have given breakdowns of occurrences of Rock/Rocks/Rocke/Rox by county. It was a time consuming editing process, but it is very useful and it means you no longer have to search for the Griffiths entries, the ones you require are all here.


nirl_rock_tele.doc & rirl_rock_tele.txt - Northern Ireland Telephone directory listings - this document is self explanatory, contains the names and addresses of all the individuals bearing the surnames, Rock, Rocks, Rock, these are sorted by county. Rocks outnumbers Rock in Northern Ireland.

rirl_rock_tele.doc & rirl_rock_tele.txt Republic of Ireland Telephone directory listings - this document is an identical one to the above, it contains the names and addresses of all the individuals bearing the surnames, Rock, Rocks, Rock, these are sorted by county. Rock outnumbers Rocks in Republic of Ireland.

IMPORTANT: I have deleted the telephone numbers, if you wish to contact any individual in the telephone directories I suggest you try these websites: for Northern Ireland = www.bt.co.uk for the Republic of Ireland = www.eircom.ie which is where the phones numbers are rightly located.

12_county_births.doc & 12_county_births.txt - most of the births for eleven Counties, some counties are omitted as either there where simply no births or they are not all available. This will expand over time, it is worth pointing out that it is sorted by county and year, starting with the earliest. This also contains Rock, Rocks, Rox and Rocke.

 11_county_marriage.doc & 11_county_marriage.txt - most of the marriage's for eleven Counties, the ones omitted are simply because there where no marriages. This will expand over time, it is worth pointing out that it is sorted by male name, so if a female Rock married say a Murphy, the entry reflects the male surname - sorry ladies!. This also contains Rock, Rocks, Rox and Rocke.

freeholders.doc & freeholders.txt - Voters/Freeholders for Northern Ireland Counties Only - this is taken from the excellent PRONI website [The Northern Ireland Public Records Office. On that website you can click on a Rock/Rocks surname and it will retrieve the original scanned document. Note the entries here are duplicates, they are the listings of the Voters/Freeholders in Northern Ireland. So you get multiple entries for the same individuals, neveretheless it is a wonderful document listing.

Dublin_Census_Wills.doc & Dublin_Census_Wills.txt - This is a complete listing of the Dublin 1851 Head of Household Census [it is reproduced below], it also contains the Wills and testamonies recorded, the summaries are reproduced below but the testamony details are in the file downloads.
