Sport in St. Joseph's

We have a very long tradition of playing Gaelic football and hurling in St. Joseph's. Many stars of Dublin teams started playing in the school. We do most of our training and play matches in Bushy Park. 

 

 

Football

The St Joseph's School Terenure team beat St Marys Rathfarnam and won the Mc Grath Shield. The winning panel is shown below.

Hurling

 The Junior hurlers  of St. Joseph's won the final of 2000 and the Corn Fianna Fail cup.   it was St Joseph’s Vs Star of Sea Sandymount. The  two teams had  already played each   other and Joeys won 12-0 to 1-2. the score was 2-4 to 0-1 in the final.

Athletics

 The U.C.D grounds now V.E.C grounds were the only location of a 220 yard straight in Ireland. We hold our school sports here each year. Each year we also have a football league for the second, third and fourth classes in the VEC grounds. It is a very big grounds with several pitches and a beautiful pavilion.

 

Cricket

Kwik Cricket is a simplified game of cricket for all boys and girls from the age of 5 onwards. It is fun and easy to organise and can be played on any indoor or outdoor surface all year round.(except winter of course.) Any number of children can play.

Brian O' Rourke of the Leinster Cricket was good enough to coach the boys of St Josephs in playing cricket (his picture is shown below)

Other Sports in Terenure

All Ireland Final in Terenure

The 1900 finals were held in 1902 on 21st  September in the Gaelic Park  Arena Terenure now called the VEC Grounds. On July 20th. 1902 Galway beat Antrim in the All Ireland Semi-Final and on September 21st. 1902 they held the Home Final here.

In the Hurling Final Galway  was represented by Ardrahan and Tipperary by Two Mile Borris.Tipp won with a  final score of 6-13 to 1-5 

In the Football Final The Clonmel Shamrocks of Tipperary beat Tuam Krugers of Galway 2-20 to 0-1.

 

Handball

The Floods Ballcourt in Terenure was the scene of many famous matches. One most notable being in 1936 when John Joe Gilmartin won the Junior Handball Singles. He was not to lose a match from then until his retirement 1947 eleven years later.

 

Rugby

The Terenure College RFC was founded in 1940 and joined to Leinster branch in the 1943/44 season. In the 1948/49 season the club's A team won the junior league and the metropolitan cup which has never since received again by another junior team. Many boys from St. Joseph's have played for Terenure in the past.
