When he came to Rathfarnham he immediately undertook to build a church and schools for Terenure. He bought a large field near the crossroads as a site and called a public meeting to raise funds for one girls' and one boys' school. £150 was raised at the meeting . He immediately built two granite buildings which today are St. Joseph's BNS. Each school consisted of one large room 66ft x 22ft in size.
