November
Hello Sausage Fiends,

Welcome to your latest celebratory update of all things TBPS. Firstly congratulations are extended to Larissa on scooping the clubs premier prize with her stunning study of the "Sugar Loaf". It was the outstanding photo of the night and well deserved to take away "The Tommy Byrne Memorial Trophy for Landscape Photography". Stewart came a very credible second with Peter and Theresa joint third. Bernie scooped the "Highly Commended" award and a maximum ten points from one judge, so Colum's teaching must be rubbing off!

Since Saturday 22nd was "Distinction" day, you can of course be sure that the TBPS would again be among the prize winners. Congratulations to Mark and George on gaining Licentia, a tremendous reward for their hard work and no little photographic skill over the last year. Unfortunatlely Pauls Fellowship Panel received a polite hearing before being gracefully shown the door, better luck next time. Our good friend Nicholas Egan, from Enniscorthy Camera Club, also achieved a Licentia and Myles Carroll would particulalry like to thank all those TBPS members that offered advice on his way to gaining Associateship. Very well done to all!

Speaking of our good friends from Enniscorthy, they will be joining us for a fun evening of photography next Wednesday November 26th from 8pm in the Lounge Bar of the Bridge Hotel. This will be a night of celebration for both clubs, with a fine buffet of sandwiches, apple pie and of course cocktail sausages to whet your appetites. So please do make every effort to drop down to see all the work on display. You will also get a chance to see Mark's, George's and Pauls Panel's in all their glory.

See you down The Bridge
Best Regards
Paul

P.S. George's successful panel has been attached as a sneek preview, see if you can spot what made the Judges titter?

October
15th Study Skills in Portraits this evening - we should be experts!  Examinations coming soon!!

8th 'Introduction to Photography' Classes began tonight and will run for 8 weeks, anyone with an interest in learning how to use their camera are more than welcome to join us.  After the class Paul gave a practical in digital monochrome printing.  Challenging members skills photos were brought in to see if any improvment could be made.

1st Study skills in Wildlife continued tonight focusing on critters in Iceland this evening.  Stewart's favourite trick question - what do you do if you're lost in a forest in Iceland?  Ansa - stand up - there are no forests in Iceland!

24th
17th A pre-launch of 'Age Action Positive Ageing Week' took place at the Arklow Business Enterprise Centre, Kilbride Industrial Estate tonight where our Opening Exhibition took place. We are staging a new exhibition dedicated to this particular week which officially begins on Friday. Opened by Arklow's Mayor Mr. Nicky Kelly compliments were made to the Arklow Age Action group who are one of only ten towns in the country hosting such a week and hopes that other towns can build on the success of ours; to the Arklow Business Enterprise Centre for being a model centre for the rest of the country and to the society all of which brings together three different elements of the local community. Mr. Roy Keegan outlined the events throughout the week and stressed that they are there for all age groups to participate in. In addition to the exhibition running in the foyer of Arklow Business Enterprise Centre we also have the use of the new Board Room where we have a general display of photos adorning the walls. Members of the public are more than welcome at the Centre to view the Gallery 9am-5pm.

10th Preparation for forthcoming Exhibition at the Arklow Business Enterprise Centre for Age Action Week.

3rd Panel beating. The IPF Panel Distinction's are coming around again and preparation is under way.  It's hard to put it all together in the first place but harder when others have their say.

20th Movie Night Magic (well, photography!) with Bill Oddie and David LaChappelle
13th
6th
3rd & 4th August  - RNLI Maritime Weekend - have your photo taken with Stormy Stan!!
All proceeds to Arklow RNLI Station

July
16th  Since the weather will not be too bad, we have a choice of outward-bound opportunities.

a)   For those that like to travel and meet interesting people, there is Motocross practice in Ferns from 6:30pm until
      9pm.

b)   If that is not your cup of tea, then why not take some shots of beautiful Arklow for the Chamber of Commerce
updated www. arklow.ie website. They require "street" scenes with hanging baskets. With the Seabreeze
Festival this weekend, the Town is looking at its best. Particular attention should be paid to the wonderful
floral display of our host's, The Bridge Hotel. Also the Chamber would like some shots of the Town Hall and the
      Church. Think pretty!

For dessert, when we all get back to base, El Presidente has a little treat for us in the shape of a "Photography Quiz". He has been working on it since last Wednesday, so its bound to be devilishly difficult, especially if he asked for Colum's help!

June
22nd Well it was another successful piece of comunity service by the TBPS this weekend, raising €165 for the Sharpeshill WSPCA animal refuge. Particular thanks to Julie and Stewart for taking the pics and extracting the cash, Larissa for coffee and team support, and finally Paul for stressed out printing! Please note that the puppy was returned unharmed, once the ransom fee was paid ;-) [see photo]

18th "Rain and Old Arklow"
Many thanks to El Presidente on filling the breach with a fine slideshow of old photos of Arklow. The locally born members found it particularly moving and it goes to show how vital our role as preservers of local history is, with the help of of our little cameras of course!

May
21st "Jorge v Ronaldinho"
Well, as promised Stewart gave us his "ramblas" slideshow of Barcelona. I think the highlight was the "Goldfish" that turned into a casino, but that might just have been the strong beer. George was quiet emotionally taken by the images and manged to keep his own commentary going for the whole show, I told you he was Espangol!

18th "Serious Horse Power"
Many thanks again to Bernie for providing the info on todays events. She also arranged the weather so as to keep the dust down at the Motocross.  The Society made a presentation of a framed photo and a photographic album to the South East Motocross Club, in grateful thanks of their allowing us such close access to the track. On a personal note I found my second visit to the track yielded much better shots, but I also found the Showjumping action, at Barnadown Equestrion Centre, much more difficult to gain correct focus on. So I look forward to having another go soon.

14th "Jorges Magical Mind"
Paul brought in "forget me nots" in a tiny vase, Colum some watches, Julie flowers from the garden and Larissa an idea for a licentia panel involving a bullet, a scissors and some IPF blood. As you can see the usual evenings creative thinking session. Well at least you can always rely on George to find a quirky angle, like doing portraits using Colums watch as a filter. You have to admit the boy has talent .......... for mischief that is!

7th "Red Skua in the Ring"
Well Sir Colly D'Wobbles took the troops off on another voyage of photographic discovery. This time inspired by an idea involving his Grandfather, a close friend of Moses by the way. In any case it would all end up in a masterclass on differential focusing. As usual Paul missed the whole point, serves him right for not paying attention ;-)
April
30th "Lessons in History"

Well the Three Amigos got to put their panels on display for the rest of the "Home Team" and I think everybody got a full appreciation for the amount of work and attention that went into preparing each one.  Hopefully this success will spur on other members to give the process a spin for November, so get thinking now!

Following this Stewart gave us a little recitation on the history of the 1500's, but of course Colum remembered it all from his youth!

(And for a little photo humour go here!)

28th "Community Service"

Once again the TBPS shows its commitment to bringing photography to the attention of the general public, this time in conjunction with East Wicklow Youth Services. As part of a nationwide project, the junior residents of Inbhear Mor Park asked our assistance in adding a photographic element to their submission. Enter Willie and his trusty teaching skills in order to help our little friends get to grips with visual communication. Congratulations to him on keeping the children's attention rapt for the whole hour, and there was still a buzz of excitement at the end as he helped each in turn get to grips with their camera.

26th D-Day has arrived... Here's what Paul had to say:

Hello Photo Friends,
It is with great pleasure that I announce that Stewart, Robert and Paul were all successful in their distinction applications this weekend. I am sure that all three would like to thank all those members that offered advice, support and good wishes over the last few weeks to help us get over the finishing line. We couldn't have done it without you!

Yesterday saw the succesful fruition of one of our members most cherished aims, yet they received no certificate in return. Over the last three years this person has encouraged, cajoled, badgered and bullied in a good cause, in the process gaining seven distinctions for the Society. This is a new record for an Arklow based club by the way. For me, on a personal level, two and a half years ago I stood outside of a sports hall in Tacmon Co. Wexford and swore, never again a paneling I would go. Only but for the encouragement of one Mr. Colum D'Alton, I would not today be in the possession of an Associateship of the I.P.F. So it is with with particular greatful thanks that I doff my baseball cap to him as it is my sincerest belief that not a single distinction would have been gained without him driving us all on! This coming Wednesday you will have a chance to see the panels in the flesh.
27th April 2008

23rd "The Hollywood Dream Factory - Willie Style"

Willie finally rounded out the "intermediate course" with an often light hearted but also highly informative display of digital makeover techniques. It was a perfect way to end the season and I think we all learned a great deal along the way. So no excuses lets see some new shots based on what you have taken from the last four months!  With Willie adding the edge to Portrait photography via his trusty laptop and CS3 we did all agree that a little enhancing made a big difference and that the model would be pleased at the results.  Then we got swept up in the moment and ran with all the features that CS3 provided us with and agreed that the model would indeed prefer not to witnes those particular results at all (give her nightmares!!)

16th  "A howling good evening"

Well we finally had our third AGM and it seems the membership is pleased with our progression, as the committee remains the same for another year. So no escapees, sorry Larissa ;-)

Many thanks to our good buddies in the South Wicklow Canine Club, who kindly came in force to judge our efforts taken during their recent dog show. Many congratulations to Peter on scooping the top prize, but also a particular well done to George (2nd) and Bernie joint third with Larissa. Beware; Uncle Colum will be measuring you all for distinctions in November at this rate!

9th Due to a shortage of Puffins, our trip to the Saltee Islands has been put back until same time next month. Our man in the know,
Mr. Puffin (aka Mick Kelly), assures us that will be a more opportune time.

Last night we had a fun session on birefringence with Colum. George in particular seemed to be almost light headed with excitment, as Stewart's attached photo proves. Pretty fancy shooting from Mr. Case, 1/8 of a second at 200mm hand held, and sharp where it needs to be sharp! Also attached is my version of Colum's "Crystal Ship", almost makes you want to put on a Doors record somehow ;-)

6th

Pssssst - Happy 3rd Birthday TBPS!!

3rd Well it was a very busy night down the Bridge, and Britney kept us out until well past midnight!. Once again many thanks to all those members that brought in new work this week, including prints from Bernie and slides from Colum. El Presidente and Paul had their panel's well and truly sorted, many hands make light work, now its over to the judges :-(

After a couple of weeks of "lah-di-dah" Art documentries, this weeks screening, "Britney Speared by The Paps", proved to be quiet shocking and thought provoking. If you have missed any of our recent film shows and would like to borrow a DVD, please contact me and I will make it avialable for you. Also if you have anything that you would like to show the Society, once again please contact me with details.

March
25th Hello Photo Fiends,
Dust down your cameras, after such a buzzing weekend at the race track, this Wednesday it is back to school with Julie and her lecture on People Photography. Again I would like to encourage all members to bring in some of their work for discussion on the evening, be they prints or on a disk / card. To get you in the mood I have attached my interpretaion of Whistlers famous painting of his Mother, a candid shot taken on Easter Sunday. Is it "art imitating art" or just a load of rubbish, the viewer decides ;-) Either way let's see your people shots!

Many thanks are extended to Bernie for the invitation to the Motorcross event on Saturday, she even arranged the perfect weather. For my part I blasted through 3725 frames in three hours, nearly as much as I took all last year. Colum's maxim of the monkey and the camera was never more aptly executed, so I am bound to have at least one good image (hopefully). As agreed all those present are requested to bring in their twenty best of the day, again on disk/card, and we will do up a little presentation pack to show our gratitude to the South Eastern Motorcross Club for their gracious hospitality on the day.

See you down the Bridge

Update: 20th The TBPS will be attending the National Youth Motocross Championships in Ferns this Saturday (22nd). Many thanks to Bernie for arranging the invitation. Those wishing to attend should meet at 9:30am at The Bridge Hotel on Saturday morning. This is an ideal oportunity to try out Sports Action photography and in general have a good day out.

Next Wednesday (27th) will see the start of Julie's lectures on people photography, the final part of our intermediate course. Don't forget to bring in your five prints for the Wicklow Exhibition.

The TBPS has now officialy moved from the Southern section of the I.P.F. to the Dublin and South Leinster Region. I must say I do love their initials "DSLR", same as Digital Single Lens Reflex. Their website is http://www.dslr-ipf.com/index.html

In recent weeks we have being looking at "Art" as inspiration and instructor for photography, with the help of the BBC's excelent series "The Secret Life of Masterpieces". Hopefully these episodes have given members a more visual appreciation of "colour theory", perspective, composition and lighting, all be it from a painters point of view. As the intermediate course draws to a close I would like to encourage members to bring in images for discussion, perhaps a shot from a magazine or the internet that piques their interest or that they would like help in trying to achive a similar result. To get you started I have attached copies of the two paintings we have looked at Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" and Vermeer's "The Art of Painting". These are iconic images, can we learn anything from them for use in our work?

Likewise if there is a particular subject that you would like tackled please send me an e-mail so that we can examine it for you.

Update: 13th Next week marks the beginning of stage three of our intermediate course, sports photography. Your guides for the following two weeks will be Stewart and Peter. In preparation for Wednesday's lesson Stewart has asked for you to bring in a couple of print's of a sports shot, perhaps trying a capture with flash and one without.

Also in preparation for our exhibition in Wicklow County Buldings, members are asked to bring in a selection of five prints, A4 or 8 x 11, for consideration. The society will select a maximum of two per member and will cover the cost of mounting and framing. The opening of the exhibition is Monday June 9th at 5:30pm. So get you prints in as soon as posible.

Other News:
Motor Cross Event Easter Saturday, ideal sports practice, more details from Bernie next Wednesday.

In April we plan another trip to the Saltee Islands, please contact me if you wish to be kept informed as to our plans, as closer to the event we may have to react quickly on this one as "time and tide" etc..

Following sport we will move onto portraiture with Julie.
