You
will find a racing class to suit all tastes and pockets at Tipperary
Raceway. The cars racing
at present range in value from €200 right up to €30,000+. The quarter
mile oval plays host to
a variety of classes at its full race meetings held throughout the year,
mostly on Sunday
Afternoons. The following are run at every race meeting:

|
NATIONAL HOT RODS
The "creme de la creme" of short oval racing, these cars
are like mini Nascar racers in the States with their steel spaceframe
chassis and lightweight plastic / kevlar bodies. Powered by full race 2
litre engines, these hot rods can cover the quarter mile oval in under
15 seconds with the help of race spec. suspension, fat racing slick
tyres, rear wheel drive and aerodynamic aids. |

|
1600 HOT RODS This
class is unique to Tipperary and has been hailed as a future success
story. These cars can run a steel or a
semi spaceframed body but all must run a controlled 1600 Opel /
Vauxhall engine in eight valve form with one control camshaft for
all. Suspension mods. are allowed as are wide rim wheels with fat slick rubber,
usually NHR cast offs. Close, competitive racing on a realistic budget.
|

|
1300 STOCK RODS
Another
extremely popular and competitive class, the Stock Rods provide tight, close racing. Based on a production car steel body these racers are mostly 1300cc engined Opel Corsas or Toyota
Starlets. Race engines and suspension
mods. are allowed but
the drivetrain must not be modified i.e. FWD cannot become RWD &
the engine has to be from the same manufacturer as the shell.
|

|
2000 LIGHTNING RODS An
inexpensive but entertaining class, the Lightning Rods are all 2 litre
Ford Sierras in basically standard roadgoing form. Some suspension
modifications are allowed but a ban on most expensive race parts should
keep the class cheap and cheerful. Grid numbers increasing all the time.
|
 |
1000
cc PRODUCTIONS
Similar in concept to the Lightning Rods in that these cars are raced
in totally standard road form. Some lightening of the shell is allowed
and controlled suspension modifications but all mechanics and
bodywork must remain standard. Fiat 127s have been the backbone
of this class for years, but
Unos, Polos etc are now seeing use.

MINI STOX
The
beginners class in oval racing, Mini Stox are intended for younger
teenage drivers. The cars are basically identical as standard 850cc
Minis. They are protected by a steel framework which surrounds the car
and can take a hefty shunt without damage to car or driver. Excellent
learning curve for future classes of oval racing.
