Wednesday March 5th 2003 :

I don't think there's any need to tell you all how well Wednesday night's prize giving went, I have a feeling nearly everyone was there! If you weren't, well, let's just say you really missed out....you might even have had the serial number right first time (you had to be there for that one!).

Michael Heery spoke about how he's modernising the AAI and trying to stay in touch with Athletics at the grass roots level. His mere presence and affability, shaking each runners hand, with word for everyone, shows what he meant. He may have even suggested that we have some budding new athletes, and after looking at some of the new PBs set last night we think he might just be right! Roll on the West Waterford Summer Series eh?!

If you did run last night, check out how you did, week 16 results, and the list of overall winners.

Well done and thanks to every single runner who partook of even one run over the League. Several people commented on how it shortened their winter. If they take part in the Summer Series and Winter League, the whole year will just fly past!

We'll post updates, intesting pieces of news, or results from races where we've had Road Runners taking part over the next while. If you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see hear just drop us a line. Over and Out (I need at least 1 week off ok?!)

Monday March 3rd 2003 :

We're almost all set for our last run on Wednesday, and even more importantly our night out in Alfie's after! Make sure to drag along everyone you know that can put one foot in front of the other for a few miles on Wednesday night. You never know they might even get a spot prize out of it later in the night. We have tons of prizes from a variety of sponsors, Snocream, Glanbia, Bus Eireann, Honeywell Application Services, WIT Fitness Suite, Alfie Hales and lots lots more. See you there and don't forget to bring a buddy along for the run!

Wednesday February 26th 2003 :

The rain didn't help numbers tonight unfortunately. Maybe everyone's holding back for their best run next Wednesday!! Please come along and enter, even for the shorter course. We really want to hit the 100 mark!!.
Week 15 results
.

More Importantly!!!
After next week's run, at approx. 9.30pm, we will have our prize giving ceremony down in Alfie Hales of Lombard Street. There are literally
dozens of prizes, including something for all those that completed 10 runs of the 14 timed ones! Besides the prizes there will be an opportunity to purchase for a very small fee any photos of yourself taken over the course of the league....oh, and there'll be some grub laid on too!!! Please come along!

See you there!!!

Tuesday February 25th 2003 :

Check out our updated photogallery for week 13 photos....I'm catching up! The following report went into the News and Star this week courtesy of the Red Setter!!

This week saw a total of 69 runners take the line on what was a cold evening at the RSC. Just two more nights left in the series and in all almost 200 runners have taken part, which makes the event a huge success. All proceeds will go to the Special Olympics Fund and great credit is due to the organisers Waterford Road Runners. In the 3 mile race it was a case of Sister Act II as Celine and Fiona Carroll having placed second and third last week went one better on Wed to take the first two places this week. Another newcomer Siobhan Kennedy had a splendid run in third place with a fine time of 26.15 while Valerie Crowley took the fourth place to make the first four finishers all ladies - girl power! Eugene Lambert was best of the men arriving back in 22.58,which was also the best time of the night with Seamus Kennedy second in 25.42 and Garry McCarthy third in 26.57. Teresa Molohan was fastest lady on the night with 23.00 followed by Valerie Crowley 24.43 and Lorraine Fennelly 25.41. Good runs too by Maria Grant and Sarah Towsley for the girls and Kevin Murphy and James Power for the boys. In the 5 mile event there was a win for George O'Grady in a time of 35.36 followed by Damien Byrne 35.43 and Paul Grant 28.08. Paul had a good run in the national indoor 3,000m in Belfast recently having been the top schoolboy 800m runners throughout his career. In the ladies race Anne Matthews from Mullinavat was best in a time of 45.53 closely followed by Bernie Laherty 43.25 with Joanne Jackman again recording the fastest time of the night 33.02 to take the third spot. Fastest man on the night was Paul Grant with Michael Halley showing good consistency second in 28.11 and the lean machine himself Larry Kennedy flying the flag for the old and infirm everywhere, third in 28.12. PJ Guinan cracked the 29 minute barrier for the first time while Aaron Colbert cracked his shin at the halfway mark. Clever chap phoned the emergency services eight 777 and a ten to get him home. Denis O'Brien boxed clever to escape the clutches of Davy Foley down the Cork Road while Joe Ryan came home to tremendous applause, no doubt milking it for all it's worth. David Drohan is a bit of a web wizard we hear while Colm Cheevers may be employed by the weapons inspectors following his experience searching for "Sam " missiles in Portlaw Woods. One notable absentee this week was Brendan Doyle who was delayed searching for his trademark white gloves, better out of the world than out of the fashion as my mother used to say. Just two weeks to go and we are calling on all runners to support the last two races. So far we have gone close to the magical 100 runners in a single night and would love to do it in this series. With all proceeds going to the Special Olympics it's your chance to share the dream so make a point of getting to the RSC this Wed at 6.30pm. Thanks to this week's main sponsor Jack and Jill Montessori, Tramore and to MacTrans, Qualitile and 877710 Taxis. Also Sam McCauleys for our photos and all our previous monthly sponsors. Don't forget Alfie Hale's Intersport shop is giving a 10% discount to all our members

Wednesday February 19th 2003 :

69 people tonight including 5 newbies. Could someone see if these European soccer games could be played on a different night by any chance? Poor Aaron took a fall at Fas but was lucky enough to get a free taxi ride back to the RSC... some of us had to make do with a walk home! Only 2 weeks to go everyone and we'd really love to break the 100 mark on one of those nights, so if you're between two minds next week or the week after, just think about the craic agus ceol to be had in Alfie Hale's on March 5th. Week 14 results.

Wednesday February 12th 2003 :

A mere 79 people tonight......I blame that Brian Kerr fella!! Mind you 6 of those were new runners, 4 of which I think are training for the Dublin Marathon and will be looking for tips and encouragement from the more experienced of you out there, so don't be afraid to lend a hand. No injuries tonight, at least none that I'm aware of! Plenty of steam rising at the finish line though! Maybe next week we'll try some of those sprints that the guys beside the finish line were doing...ready....set...go!!!! Week 13 results.

Watch this space for details of our End of League and Prize Presentation Night on March 5th after our final run. Alfie Hale's will be the venue, with plenty of grub for everyone. Put it into your diary now!!

Wednesday February 5th 2003 :

A fantastic 89 people turned up tonight. Only 88 completed the course though, poor Chelly, after her brilliant sub 40min 5 mile run last week, busted her hamstring half way through....hard luck Chelly. Well done to her however on her Colligan Cup run on Sunday, and to all out Road Runners who got places or just enjoyed the day. Especially to Helena Dunphy, James Maguire and Larry Kennedy who got their names in the News & Star!!! Tonight we had a new pb for the birthday girl, Happy Birthday again Bernie (did you ever see anyone go that red?!). See how the others did alongside her, Week 12 results.

Tuesday February 4th 2003 :

Check out our links, fixtures and photogallery for updates!!

Thursday January 30th 2003 :

You might have noticed a results sheet up last night detailing the results of the first half of the League up to and including Week 9. The results included all those that did at least 5 out of the 7 timed runs. Of those runs, your points were calculated by adding the position you attained in your best 5 runs, i.e. your 5 lowest positions. If you were lucky enough to cross the line in 1st position, 5 times over the 7 runs, and came 3rd the other two nights, then your points total would be 5. Get it?!

See if you're on there Results 'til Half-way and if not, keep coming along every Wednesday night till the end when we'll complete the overall results, probably based on your 10 best runs (not decided yet!)!

Wednesday January 29th 2003 :

Only one new person tonight, see how he did, along with all the others! Week 11 results.

Wednesday January 22nd 2003 :

Another bumper number of runners pounded the roads of Waterford tonight, 86, including 9 newbies: week 10 results.
Keep an eye on the fixtures list from now on, for Spring and Summer runs that might interest you.

Monday January 20th 2003 :

Check out the photos of our Christmas fun run and our first run of the New Year. Photogallery

Wednesday January 15th 2003 :

Another great turnout on a terrific night for running. 85 werewolves (well, almost werewolves, it was almost a full moon!) travelled up and down the Cork road or traversed the Industrial Estate (all in the right direction this time, unlike poor PJ Irish last week who got lost in the Estate and had to call into Bausch and Lombe to ask for directions!). See how they ran, see how they ran : week 9 results.

Tuesday January 14th 2003 :

Of last week's run Gerry Madden writes:

Week 8 Paddy Byrne Winter League (In aid of Special Olympics)
Once again there was a large turn out for stage 8 of the Winter League
series with a total of 69 runners going to the post on what was a cold but
good night for running.
In the 3 mile event we had a new winner in Eugene Lambert who covered the
course in 26.42 with Tom Croke in 2nd place just a second behind and David
Sheehan having a great run to take 3rd. In the women's race there was good
win for Niamh Hearne in a time of 26.44 with Teresa Molohan in 2nd place in
32.12. The women's race also saw the return of Adele Walsh and she burned up
the course in an impressive 21.20 to record the fastest time of the night
and take the 3rd place. There was good running also from Susan McGill who
posted a time of 24.03 while Valerie Crowley clocked 26.09.
The 5 mile race saw a win for PJ Irish despite a few navigational problems
around the Industrial Estate with Trevor Swift taking 2nd and Keith Barry
the 3rd spot. In the ladies race Joanne Jackman was first and also set the
fastest time with 32.54 with Bernie Laherty in 2nd just a second ahead of
Anne Matthews. Robert Wade who is home from Chicago and Shane Power set the
fastest times with Paul Grant and Gary Nugent also in fine form clocking
28.46 and 28.47 resp. Larry Kennedy was home in 29.42 while Michael Halley
just missed the 30 min barrier with 30.02.
Thanks to all our sponsors Snowcream, Byrne Gas, MacTrans, 877710 Cabs,

69 runners kicked off their New Year's Resolutions with a bang! Check out how they did, week 8 results.

Monday December 16th :

A word from Gerry Madden, our Red Setter:

Once again Jack Frost failed to diminish the numbers or dampen the
enthusiasm as 79 hardy souls set off on week 6 of the Winter League.
In the 3 mile section it was a case of girl power as the 20 runners were led
home by Margaret Barron in a time of 27.46 followed by Eileen Winters
(28.39) with Sarah Towsley having a good run in third place.Gerard
O'Sullivan the first man past the post, covering the course in 23.13
followed by Martin O'Sullivan with Francis Lonergan in third. Speed
merchants on the night were David Evans who clocked 22.06 while Susan McGill
ran a very respectable 23.19 for the ladies.
In the longer event a field of 59 runners went to the post and the winner
was Adrian Bourke in 36.28 with Pat McCarthy in runner-up spot (37.15) while
Brian Hartery took third with a time of 33.46. Nice to see Anne Matthews and
Bernie Laherty stepping up to the longer distance with Bernie still managing
to get third place.
A few observations - I see Declan Harte is climbing the ranks so be on your
guard while Nicholas Halley of Mooncoin Rose to the occasion with a good run
in 14th spot. Davy Foley of Irish Rail is back on track in 20th spot while
the wiry Colm Cheevers showed plenty of spark with a 34.02 run.
Former Waterford AC sprint star Alan Everett showed there's life in the old
dog still with a speedy 36.14 run while the daddy of them all Mick Neville
was just a few seconds slower with 36.40.
Top gun time wise in the 5 mile was Paul Stephenson who clocked 28.53 with
Michael Halley next best in 29.55 and Mark Langford third in 30.21. The fast
ladies on the night were Joanne Jackman in a time of 33.46 with Helen Whyte
and Helena Dunphy also running well.
Next weeks run will be non competitive so bring your Christmas hats and your
flashing reindeer noses to brighten up proceedings before we head to Alfie
Hales in Lombard St to replenish the lost fluids at 9.30pm. See you there.

Also, listen out for Fintan on WLR at 1pm every Saturday, giving a run down of the results. Week 5 Results

We'd be delighted if you'd then join us around 9.30 for a Christmas get together in Alfie Hales (after you've showered of course!). A great way to get to know your rivals better and to win a spot prize, without having to sweat!!

See you there!!!

Wednesday December 4th :

We had our biggest attendance tonight, 88 runners, 16 of whom were new!
Tonight was a very fast night all round, with handicaps increasing all across the results sheet. It must have been the freezing temperatures that brought out the best in everyone, or maybe just the urge to get back home to a nice warm shower! Preliminary Week 4 Results

Tuesday December 2nd :

A word from the garrulous Seamus Cooper:

Paddy Byrne Winter League - sponsored by Snowcream
This week saw a true test for all the runners on what was a cold, wet and windy night.
There were some great performances and personal battles waged especially between three former greats from Villa FC 4th Division, namely John Kinlon from the Cooley Mountains, Brendan Doyle of Coca Cola fame and the flying Taxman Pat Burke. However it was the Cooley Hare who stole the show this week.
Also running well though finding it hard to see out of two lovely black eyes was boxer and last years junior winner Denis O'Brien. You should see the other fella !!
A lot of runners could learn from Bernie Power's warm weather training regime. It involves mostly interval sessions in a variety of pubs in Spain, however she was still first lady home, so whatever works. Poor Ray looked lost and lonely but we hear he's a "Great Deal" better.
Best wishes to Joe Ryan, who drives the fastest milk car in the West, he missed this week's race as he had a racing commitment in Newbury, England. Come back safely "Ernie".
Currently out of action is legendary Waterford AC athlete Gerry Deegan, now a vet he still looks 10 years younger now that the famous handlebars are gone. Expect to see him back and flying shortly.

It's hotting up nicely !! SC.

Monday December 2nd :

Week 3 Results available at last!

Friday November 29th :

Despite the horrific showers preceeding kick off at 7pm on Wednesday, we had 76 determined runners out that night. It was the maiden run for 7 of our newcomers, some of whom featured in the top 3 men's 5 miles results. Well done!

Week 3 results coming soon!!

Wednesday November 20th :

87 unfortunate runners braved the wind and rain and cold to complete tonight's routes!! Well done Road Runners! Week 2 Results

Wednesday November 13th :

Tonight we had 72 runners tackle the 5 mile route and 11 ventured out for 3 miles.
Check out the Week 1 Results to see your time and find out your handicap for next week, November 20th.

Don't forget your number next week!
