Attention Dog Owners:

The committee is asking dog owners not to take their dogs onto the hills where access is gained through land with livestock.  Farmers are angry at dog owners whose dogs worry sheep – causing death and destruction, even when the dog is on a lead.  This gives all ‘hillwalkers’ a bad image and is unhelpful in access issues. The Wee Binnians do not allow dogs on walks and we are appealing to members not to take dogs onto the hills at any time and to pass this message to friends who might feel their little ‘Scottie’ is harmless.  Try the beach instead....

Leave No Trace – the principles of outdoor ethics.

Following on in our series about ‘Leave No Trace – principles of outdoor ethics, which the Wee Binnians embrace, today we cover ‘Keep to Durable Ground’.

Durable ground includes established tracks and campsites, rock, gravel, dry grasses and snow.

Prevent erosion.

·         In popular areas; on established tracks, walk in single file in the middle of the track even when wet and muddy.  Keep campsites small and discrete.

·         In remote areas; disperse to prevent the creation of new tracks or campsites.

·         Avoid places where impacts are just beginning to show.

These principles are very relevant to Wee Binnian activities and we must recognise and minimise the impact on the environment, of walking with a club in large numbers.
