Tom worked as a builder's labourer for Kyle Brothers Ltd, of Rathfarnham, in Dublin. Maureen was a forewoman in the Pharmaceutical department of Reckitts factory in Edmondstown, Rathfarnham. Their first child, Eva, was born in 1952. Maureen's sister, Eva Spear, invited them to visit her family in Canada, and they moved there for a number of years, living in Roblin and in The Pas in Manitoba. Tom worked on the railroad, and also for the Department of Agriculture (Prairie Farms Rehabilitation Association division). This latter job involved surveying of wilderness areas, often in extremes of weather. During their time there, the family grew with the addition of Joan, in 1955, and David in 1956. The family returned to Ireland in 1964, and two years later William James Walsh (Willie!) joined the clan.
