BIRDS

Birds such as Feral Pigeons, Starlings and Seagulls present a variety of problems to both urban and rural environments. The uric acid present in bird droppings is highly corrosive to metal and masonry. In an urban environment considerable damage can be done to rooftop machinery and ventilation. Loose masonry caused by these corrosive elements is an obvious hazard to the general public.

Roosting birds can present noise pollution problems and faeces-covered buildings not only portray a shabby image, but the bacteria and parasites present in bird droppings represent serious health risks.

In a rural environment the above-mentioned issues also apply, but are further compounded by the damage birds can cause to cereal and fruit crops throughout the year.

HOW TO TACKLE BIRDS

Control of birds through population reduction techniques is generally both less desirable and less effective than removing their food sources or blocking off sites where they perch or roost. The latter technique, known as proofing, is now used extensively with blunt spikes, sprung wires and nets installed on buildings to keep birds off without harming them.
