On the 1900 Hector, NY census, Grace Maude RECKORD was known as"Maudie G. BENNETT", b. Sep 1899, apparently daughter of Edith WYATT(then 18) and William BENNETT (then 33, b. Sep. 1866), all living withSamuel & Nora (Wyatt) Chesley - the sister of Edith Wyatt (Bennett)Reckord.
In 1910 the whereabouts of Grace and her mother Edith are unknown. But Edith Reckord's sister, Nora Wyatt Chesley, was living a coupledoors away from the Harry Smith family in Partridge District, Reading,Schuyler co., NY (outside Watkins Glen village). So that is theconnection that led to Grace going to live with the Smiths between1910 & 1915. Edith was living in Dix township in 1912, then inMontour by 1914/1915.
Family info says she was unofficially adopted by "Harry Mosher Smith"of Watkins Glen. He was a coal yard owner and produce broker, andlived at 330 S. Franklin St. from 1916.
In 1915, he was still living on the original farm of his father,Philetus S. Smith.
Town of Reading - 1915 Census
SMITH Harry M head 46 - farmer
Edna wife 42
Donald M son 6
"RECKFORD" Grace servant 15 (should be RECKORD)
Before marriage, Grace worked at the Chaffee-Watkins shop, a clothingstore just south of the 4 corners on Franklin St.
[13] Her gravestone says she was born in 1900, but her death cert. givesbirthdate as Sep. 28, 1899, which agrees with her age on herdaughter's birth cert. & also with the Sep. 1899 birthdate on the 1900census (for "Maudie G. Bennett").
[14] She died at age 47.
[15] Her gravestone gave her birth year as 1900, but it should have been1899.
[16] Was not officially adopted, but lived with the Smiths for about 8-10years before she married in 1921.
