Checked the 1900 Noble, IL census, but wasn't able to find Sarah (muchof it was hard to read). Some of her children or grandchildren werethere.
From Kathy Toppins, in 2005:
Article, dated 1900
"Mrs. Sarah A. Stevens, of Cleves, Ohio, is visiting her son, C. H.Stevens,
at the gas station. Mrs. Stevens' maiden name was Hayes, and is arelative
of ex-President Hayes of the Ohio valley. She states to us that shewas born
into this deceptive world January 25, 1816, consequently she is inher 82nd
year. Her hair is of the sandy tinge, characteristic of the Hayes',and
never turns gray. Her eye sight and hearing is good. She is straightas an
Indian, talks fluently and has a quick light step of a girl ofeighteen
years. Her husband died in 1872, since which time she has lived inwidowhood
in her comfortable little home in Cleves, where she has the watchfulcare of
her children, Samuel, Elizabeth and Bell, all comfortably situated onfarms
near her home. Besides these she has a daughter, Melissa, in Buffalo,N.Y.,
whose husband is a machinist, long since retired; Fannie, who livesin
Madison, Wisconsin, superintendent of the Park Hotel; Clinton H., whois
chief engineer of the Weiderman Brewing Co., Newport, Ky; Charles H.,who
occupies a prominent position with the Indiana Natural Gas & OilCompany
here, and Mahlon, who owns a stock ranch in Kansas, all of whomcontribute
monthly to their mother's comfort. Mrs. Stevens says this will be herlast
visit and she hopes soon to be at rest. She seems perfectly contentedand
awaits the Master's call. She is a devout Methodist of many yearsstanding.
The reminiscent of her life she will leave to posterity written byher son,
C. H. Stevens."
[The date she lists here for her husband's death is 1872, instead of
1873. The birth date for Dewit C is 1863, but the birth date for
Clinton H as 1861. Also, she says she was born in 1816, not 1818.]
Kathy Toppins' grandmother Edna said there were 13 children.
Sarah Hayes mentions eight: Samuel, Elizabeth, Bell, Melissa, Fannie(Sarah F), Clinton H., Charles H., Mahlon (sometimes Malin).
Royal S. Hayes was on the 1900 census in Cleves, Hamilton co., Ohio, about 2 pages from where Sarah Ann Hayes Stevens was listed. (He wasa teacher in 1900 and wrote a book on Hayes genealogy.) Job & EnosHayes & family were also in the Cleves area in 1900.
[277] From census info, birth year was 1818, but 1816 was her own memory.
