3. Auckland, New Zealand

The flight from Nadi to Auckland was only about 2 1/2 hours and we looked forward to meeting Simon Reichenbach, whom I hadn't seen since leaving New Zealand in 1985. We did recognise each other after 19 years, which was helpful. Simon very kindly put us up for the two days we were in Auckland and graciously offered us some of his time to show us the sights of the city, which we further explored on the Monday. We indulged in some shopping for All Black merchandise and watched slack-jawed as people bungie-jumped from the Sky Tower, the Southern Hemisphere's tallest building. All that sunshine must do things to people...

Auckland is beautifully located on not one harbour, but two. Sydney might be the more famous location, but Auckland wins hands down in the scenery stakes. It even has a harbour bridge, which - again - isn't as famous as that other harbour

bridge, but no less impressive. Auckland calls itself the City of Sails, and it's easy to see why, as just about everyone in the city seems to own a boat. Auckland even hosted the America's Cup. The other notable feature of the city are the many dormant volcanoes, of which several dot the skyline. Perhaps the most famous one on this side of the world is One Tree Hill, made famous by U2.
