2. Tokoriki/Fiji

From SF we flew to LA and then overnight to Nadi in Fiji, arriving very early on January 1st. It was a bit weird having New Year's in mid-air and having people wish you a Happy New Year upon landing! We waited for our luggage and had to wait some more to check in for our connecting flight. Getting to Tokoriki Resort is a bit of an adventure. As a remote island away from the Fijian mainland, the ways of getting there are threefold: by helicopter, seaplane, or water taxi. Needless to say, we booked the seaplane. Along the way we flew past tiny tropical islands including the one used for the Tom Hanks film "Castaway".

The heat and humidity was intense: uncomfortably so. We also had to watch out for the sun, which burned us in minutes, and the jetlag was something fierce! Our days, therefore, began at 5 am with a walk down the beach, followed by

breakfast and a lot of lounging by the pool. During the afternoon we would have a long siesta in our honeymoon bure (hut). The highlight of the trip was snorkelling on the reef among the tropical fish, but there was a bit of a swell, so it wasn't a swim for the faint-hearted. The last night we had to spend on the mainland to catch an early flight to Auckland. Altogether it was a mixed break: fantastic food and lovely pool, but very hot and humid.
