My question is not addressed here...

Are the Archives of Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly Public Records?

No. It is important to note that the details entrusted to the priests of the Archdiocese by people celebrating the Sacraments of Baptism and Marriage are essentially a privately-compiled collection and are not public property. Access to them is at the discretion of the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly which currently chooses to limit consultation of these records to agencies of its approval.

How do I consult these records?

The approved centre is the Tipperary Family History Research formerly the Tipperary Heritage Unit.

What is Tipperary Heritage Unit/Tipperary Family History Research?

Tipperary Heritage Unit was set up in 1985 as a sub committee of Tipperary Community Council (of Muintir na Tíre - a rural development organization). This social-employment scheme involved its trainees in indexing and computerisation of the Baptismal and Marriage Records of the Archdiocese thus enabling both consultation of the records and providing much-needed employment and training locally.

The Tipperary Heritage Unit has now been relocated in Tipperary Excel - a cultural, entertainment and interpretative centre in the town of Tipperary. It is now called Tipperary Family History Research (TFHR) and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tipperary Excel Heritage Company, a Registered Charity. This office is the approved centre for consultation of diocesan records.

Note: The naming "Tipperary" needs clarification - much of County Tipperary is not in the Archdiocese and some of County Limerick is.

Parishes in Counties Limerick and Tipperary may be in the dioceses of Cashel, Emly, Killaloe, Limerick, Waterford or Lismore. A map indicates the Counties of Munster. Check the list here to confirm where you should look.

Other agencies are offering to search for me - is there a difference?

Anyone can search public records such as Griffith's Valuations or Census returns or any agency can do so on your behalf. The records of Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly are available only via TFHR or from the parish concerned.

Can I approach the Parish directly and look at the books if I am in Ireland?

You will appreciate that the number of people wishing to consult records can be enormous. The population of the parishes in the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly was reduced by 68.7% from 1841 to 1946, by which year some 200,000 fewer people lived in its boundaries. Not every parish can entertain enquiries about its records and will refer you to TFHR, where the records of all parishes of Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly are indexed and available. Should the parish admit enquiry, ensure that you have all relevant details and existing variations of spellings. Some will be prepared to offer confirmation of the facts you supply, but not to undertake original research.
