Talkin Shite: Lession One - Part One
Irish (Gaeilige or Gaelic) is an ancient language reverberating with wisdom, wit and deep hidden meanings. Here are a few examples:
Dia duit! (dee-ah dwitt) -
What are you looking at?
Conas atá tú? (cunn-ass ah taw too?) -
How come you're still breathing, bastard?
Tá Pól ag rith (taw Pole egg rih) -
Paul is running
Rith Pól! Rith! (rih Pole rih) -
Faster Paul! They're reloading!
Don't worry if the prospect of learning a tounge with as many regional dialects as there are mental patients in Ireland scares you. We don't expect you to suddenly understand a whole culture at once. All that you need to sound perfectly Irish are a few phrases and English pronounciation techniques that will help you blend in when in Irish company. Best of all, some aren't verbal at all, like the two examples in the next part of this lesson... Click here to continue to Lession One, Part Two.
