In order to hear Presenters, Guests, Actors, Musicians, Studio Audience and other sounds generated in the studio it is necessary to have a microphone in close proximity to the source of the sound.
Desk mics sit on a desk in front of the person whereas other situations might call for a mic on a floor stand as in the case of musicians.
Some modern microphones (Mics) are very small and can be clipped to a persons shirt or blouse or even hidden in their hair as is done in musicals. These mics require an aerial and power pack which you can sometimes see clipped to a persons waist band or in their back pocket.
Audience mics are fitted to the end of a sound-boom or fish pole which allows the sound operator to get the mic in over the heads of other audience members to the person speaking.
