Television studio programmes are presented in the artificial environment of a Set. The set gives a visual mood, ambiance and atmosphere appropriate to the programme style and assists in enhancing the meaning of the programme's content.

The set is designed by a Production Designer in collaboration with the programmes Director and must accommodate not only the programme requirements of Presenter(s), Guests, Musicians or Actors but also accommodate the requirements of Lighting, Cameras, Sound and others engaged in the programme making process.

The set must be constructed for ease of movement in and out of studio on a weekly basis yet strong enough to survive a season of nine months to a year or longer.

Some sets for example Quiz Shows are left in studio for the duration of the recording period which is usually over a couple of weeks whereas some other sets are in for the season such as talk shows and afternoon shows or all year round as in the case of News programmes.
