Transition Year Sport

Moyle Park College has a long history of sport in the school and every year many TYO students participate in college sports due to the fact that this is a less academically challenging year. Not only are the sports teams very popular, but they are also very successful with the basketball, gaelic and soccer teams all winning competitions and championships over the last few years. Other sports in the school include golf, badminton, rugby and (soon) hurling and we hope in the near future a tennis team.

Basketball

Basketball in Moyle Park is very popular and very succesful. Last year the U16 team won the All Ireland B championships. The team coach Ms Calahan has enjoyed the recent success of the team however this year the U19 team were knocked out of the All Ireland by a very strong Kerry school. The U16 team also were defeated by Castleknock in the All Ireland.

Badminton

Badminton is run every Monday and Thursday by Mr. O'Byrne the P.E. teacher. We play rallies and full games. Although I am the only TY student who plays badminton I still find it enjoyable and know many of the students who play from the other years. It is hoped that later this year a match against Colaiste Bride will be arranged.

Swimming

Everybody knows that swimming is the most active sport around, it exercises every muscle in your body. There is only one swimming club in Clondalkin open to all ages. The Alligator Club is open to anyone and has a good reputation for winning the Leinster Finals. Training is on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Swimming is an enjoyable sport and can keep you very fit.

Rugby

In the T.Y.O class their are 3 members of the senior Rugby team. Alan Burke, Shane McCarthy and myself Rob Keane. We haven't played any games yet but we train twice a week. Our trainers are Donal O Sullivan and Mr Loftus. Hopefully when we start playing matches we will win them all.

Rob Keane

Tennis

Two students in the class play tennis, Keith Alford and Michael Bergin and they are both members of Celbridge Lawn Tennis Club. They have both completed coaching courses under the coaching of Jamie Stefford. Jamie is one of the best coaches in Ireland and America.

Soccer

Among the Transition year class the majority of people support English teams i.e Manchester Utd., Liverpool and even Spurs! These teams are very commercial so few of us support Irish League football. Thankfully most of us are Pat's fans but unfortunately one or two support Shelbourne. But we are working on revolving this problem soon. Dave Whealan is the only person out of our class who plays for the school's U15 team. He plays as either a striker or a defender.

Gaelic Football

The school has an U16 and an U18 school team with some members of the class participating in each. We lost one game and won a game and the game against Lucan was make or break. Moyler were up by 5 points with two minutes to go when tragedy struck. Two goals sent Lucan into the quarter finals. On that day the team were without their captain, David Whealan due to injury, but he was replaced in the midfield by Daniel Martin who filled his role flawlessly. Daniel Martin, Shane Mc Carthy, Stephen Mc Carthy (no relation) Keith Alford and myself all played for the school Gaelic team and we are all members of the T.Y.O class.
