A study of a neglected aspect of Irish social history, the work of the clergy of the established Church during the Great Irish Famine, and their relationship with the Cathloic population. It is generally believed that the parsons who manned the soup kitchens during the famine gave relief only to those Catholics who were willing to attend Protestant services or ‘change over’. Special attention is paid to the ultra-Protestant proselytizers who tried to take advantage of the terrible suffering in the West by establishing Missionary colonies in Dingle, Connemara and Achill, with the hope of initiating a ‘Second Reformation’ in Ireland.

Arthur Capel, Earl of Essex, was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1671 – 1677. During this period he earned the respect of Ormonde and the Catholic Community, who enjoyed his protection. He pleaded with Charles 11 to pardon St. Oliver Plunket, Archbishop of Armagh, but without success. Arrested for treason, Essex was consigned to the Tower, where his father had been Executed and subsequently cut his own throat.

Ireland had a period of craftmanship in binding that rivaled France & England during the term covered in book. Craig describes in detail the magnificent Folio bindings of the Irish Parliament which, were destroyed during the shelling of the Four Courts in the 1922 Civil War.
