ISF WORLD SCHOOLS TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
In SENEC, SLOVAKIA

St.Angela’s College & Coliaste Choilm from Cork as All Ireland Champions represented Ireland at the World Schools table tennis Championships. Ireland were also eligible to send a boys National representative team.
FAIRPLAY AWARD GOES TO St. ANGELA’S COLLEGE, CORK
In the Girls’ School Team event St.Angela’s was drawn against Italy, Greece & France. The group proved to be very tight indeed with Italy, France & Ireland equal on points by the end of the first stage. Unfortunately on sets won and lost Ireland slipped to 3rd place after loosing two more sets than Italy overall. This was doubly disappointing as St.Angelas had a better record against France and had beaten Italy 4/3. Italy went on to finish 7th while St.Angelas slipped to 12th after loosing to Germany and in a very close match against Israel. The team showed great sportsmanship even under the pressure of the count back, which took officials 20 minutes to reach a final result. At the closing ceremony the team of Anna D’Arcy, Yvonne Hurley (Cpt), Rachel O’Connor & Claire Quinlan NPC: Owen Kelly, were awarded the championships Fairplay award, voted for by the Umpires. Shanghai High School from China beat Gymnazium Vlasim, Brezinska from the Czech Republic in the Girls School Final.
In the singles event Claire Quinlan beat a French and German girl and went through to the second round second in the group after being beaten by Dai Ningynang (China) who went on to beat Zhao Yue (China) in the final. (15/13, 11/4, 3/11, 11/6). Yvonne Hurley was knocked out of the consolation in a close match by Ellina Borisover (Israel). Rachel O’Connor beat Eveline Vandeput of the Belgium Flanders National team 11/9, 11/9, 11/6. She was finally beaten by Sarah Brown from England 11/2, 11/6, 11/6. Anna D’Arcy also made it through the first round consolation beating Mahal Nakhieh from Israel 11/5, 11/3, 11/8, she was beaten in the next round by Margarita Busorgina from Latvia who finished 3rd overall.

Colaiste Choilm playing in the boys school competition had a very tough group in the first round coming up against Greece, Brazil, England & Puerto Rico. The boys managed a very good win against Puerto Rico in a very closely fought battle eventually winning 4-3. Coliaste Choilm went on to face Germany (4-0) and only narrowly loosing out to Bulgaria (3-4). The final match against Belgium Flanders went down to the last set with the Irish school pulling off an excellent 4-3 victory to finish 15th at their first ever World Championships.

National boys Team at the ISF
The championships went very well, with a very high standard on display. Ireland lost 7/0 to China. John Murphy took a set from one of the Chinese! Ireland then lost 6/1 to a Slovakian team that had reach the finals of the Europeans. Conor beat the slovak number one 3/. Ireland lost 5/2 to Israel. Murphy won one and we won the doubles.
A very tough group but the boys played quite well. A bit disappointing then that Ireland lost 4/2 to Latvia. Conor Nolan won two but John Murphy was not at his best in this match. Against Puerto Rico in the play off there was an exciting match. Ireland were 3/2 down but we came back to win 4/3. John Murphy won two and Conor Nolan won one but lost in five to the very good number one. In the individuals Murphy went through second in his group only losing to a Chinese Taipei player but beating an Austrian and an Israeli. Conor Nolan was a bit unlucky to lose 3/2 in both games to a Greek and Israeli defender. National select Schools team is Conor Nolan, John Murphy, Andrew Boland, and Conor Fahy, NPC: John O Donoghue. A special thanks was expressed by all players and captains for the work and dedication of Miriam Hurley who acted as Head of Delegation for all three teams.

ISF.World Schools Report From Louise:
In BEUVRY
From 28 March to 4 April 2000
I am just back from the World Schools in France today after
having a brilliant time. In our group we had Greece and Slovakia which was a
very hard group. We played Greece first and they beat us 7 - 0, and we
played Slovakia next who beat us 6 - 1. We beat Israel 4 -3 and then we had
to play England which was very close but they beat us 4 - 2 leaving us in
10th place.
The week was not all table tennis though, we had a cultural
night on Friday where North Mon and St. Angela's all performed in a ceili
which was very embarrassing but we had a laugh.It went down a hit with the
audience. We also had a Cultural day on Saturday where we visited a beach,
an aquarium and a big shopping centre, this gave us time to mix with all the
other countries.
