The Mens 60+ Doubles who were defending their crown had to be content this time with the silver medal again, against a very strong English team. In the Mens 50+ Doubles the Irish finally achieved the gold their play highly deserved. The team of Tommy Caffrey and Oliver Adamson, playing together for the first time since winning the Irish Close Championship 30 years ago in 1972, overcame some very strong team combinations to take the honours. The Irish duo defeated the Welsh number one pair in the Semi-finals to set up a final against the Scottish number one pairing who had defeated the highly fancied English favourites in the other Semi-final. Rolling back the years the Irish duo played outstanding Table Tennis to defeat the Scottish pairing in five tension filed sets. Caffrey using all his experience to set up Adamson's attacking shots on both forehand and backhand to finallly win the day.
