Educational Requirements:
Group work, facilitation / training qualifications are essential
Essential experience / Skills Requirements:
A minimum of three years group facilitation, training and development
Proven developmental approach with the ability to analyse problems, identify strategies to resolve them and implement actions
Ability to convey complex information, selecting the most appropriate communication style for a range of audiences
Knowledge of health and social issues facing young people and communities with particular emphasis on problems relating to sexual health, alcohol and other drug use
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to balance personal initiative with working effectively as a member of a team
Good organisational, administrative and report writing skills
Desirable experience / Skills Requirements
Proven commitment to health education and health promotion
Advocacy, liaison and networking skills
Experience of working with young people in a range of settings
Word processing, data input and analysis and other IT related skills
Ability to work evenings and weekends where necessary is essential
This position will involve some degree of travel around Cork and occasionally, outside of Cork.
JOB DESCRIPTION
PEER EDUCATION FACILITATOR
Salary scale: HSE social worker scale
Contract: Permanent subject to the continuation of funding from Cork Local Drugs Task Force. There will be a probationary period of six months.
Hours: 35 hour week. Due to the nature of the post, evening and weekend work will be required. Time off in lieu may be taken.
Holidays: Holiday entitlement is 30 days annual leave, plus public holidays.
Accountability: Accountable to the Sexual Health Co-ordinator
Key Purpose:
To implement the vision, mission, values of SHC by implementing Peer Education Outreach initiatives with the aim of mobilising targeted communities in response to sexual health and drugs awareness.
Key Tasks:
To work with other members of SHC to devise and implement strategies and programmes based on the vision, mission and values of SHC.
To continue to source and recruit suitable young people for participation in the development and maintenance of peer education outreach.
To deliver and co-ordinate the training of the young people involved in the programme, including the provision of accredited training for peer educators.
To supervise and co-ordinate the work of the young people.
To develop and facilitate a structure of support and supervision for peer educators in order to maintain standards and levels of commitment amongst participants.
To provide training and support to associated workers from the drugs and community projects involved in the programmes.
To develop and co-ordinate outreach initiatives of the project.
To act as a liaison between the project participants and other sectors of the organisation.
To develop and implement effective systems for monitoring peer education interventions and the impact of the training and programmes.
To foster a knowledge and understanding of the needs of young people and the community in Cork in the areas of drugs and sexual health awareness.
To work with management to develop appropriate policies and procedures for the project implementation.
To develop and support, with management, an advisory group for the community mobilisation aspect of the project.
To network with other appropriate agencies, both voluntary and statutory.
To attend regular supervisory meetings and appraisals. To prepare necessary reports and maintain records regarding service delivery and evaluation.
To undertake further training and development in order to maintain an up to date and effective service.
To liaise with other sectors of the Sexual Health Centre. In particular, to work in as part of the busy sexual health promotion team.
To perform other duties commensurate with the nature of the post.
