More and more Europeans arrived and they began to move west across America in search of land. These settlers saw the plains as free land, where they could set up cattle ranches. The Native peoples had been living on these lands for thousands of years and they resisted. |

At first, the Natives fought with bows and arrows but quickly adopted guns. Many years of vicious warfare followed. | |||||||
Another serious threat to the Native American was the diseases the Europeans brought with them. The Natives had no resistance to these diseases and thousands died from smallpox and measles. |
