New Tribes on the Plains
As the white settlers pressed westwards many Native American tribes were pushed ahead of them and some new tribes came to live on the Great Plains. These included the Arapaho, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Sioux (also called Lakota). The different tribes of the plains spoke different languages so some kind of common language was needed to enable them to communicate. This led to sign language.
As the Plains peoples now had guns and horses, buffalo hunting was easier. The White Men also hunted the buffalo. In the space of ten years the millions of buffalo were reduced to a few thousand. The single most important element of the Plains Peoples' way of life was almost extinct. |
