Throughout the 20th Century there has been many important historical events. These events couldn't have happened without it's people behind it. On this page we look at the people who made a difference and those who still are.
Eamon De Valera (1882 - 1975) Eamon De Valera was born in New York. He moved to Ireland where he became a maths teacher. He was the Irish Republican leader. He was the first Prime Minister and became Ireland's President. During the 1916 rebellion he led a group called Sinn Fein. He carried on with politics throughout his life and retired two years before he died.
(1890 - 1922) Michael Collinswas one of Irelands best loved heroes. He was a general in the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He fought in the 1916 Rising, but played a bigger role in the Irish Civil War. He had his own undercover army which was called the Collins' Army.
(1865 - ) William Butler Yeats was a very famous Irish poet. He is also recognised all over the world. He was awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1924. He wrote such poems as "Lake Isle Of Innisfree", " Easter 1916" and "The Tower" Yeats was part of a very creative family his father a well known painter and his brother Jack Butler Yeats a famous painter. He lived in Greystones and studied in England and mostly painted in oil.
(1944 - present) Mary Robinson was the first woman president to be elected in Ireland and in the whole of the world. Before politics she was a barrister. She was elected in 1990 and served till 1997. She retired and became the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Bono is probably Irelands most famous singer. He is the lead singer in the Band called U2. U2 is a very popular and is loved all over the world. Bono is not only a singer but is a great charity worker. He is part of Green Peace and is always creating charity events to help less fortunate countries. He helped create the big fashion show that was held in the Point only weeks ago, it was in aid of Children.
Gay Byrne was one of Ireland's favorite T.V presenters. He had his own show"The Late Late Show". It was the longest running television show ever on Irish television. He also was a great charity worker and especially for the "Children In Need" cause. He retired in 1999, but is still working on RTE Radio where he has his own show.
Pierce Brosnan is a famous actor known all over the world he was born in County Kildare and has starred in films such as "Mrs Doubtfire" he starred in James Bond films such as "Goldeneye", "Tomarrow Never Dies", "The World Is Not Enough". He also starred in a series called "Remington Steel"
Dustin the Turkey and Socky the Sock Monster are stars on the most popular childrens t.v show - The Den 2. Them and another presenter start from 3pm - 6pm and show cartoons and other childrens programmes. Dustin is also a pop star and has a new single called "32 Counties"
