The original St. Anne’s School, built on the present site in 1960, received pupils from two smaller schools in the area; the three teacher co-ed school, located at St Anne’s Hall of Lower Rd Shankill (now demolished), and a smaller school located in Loughlinstown, just south of the Silver Tassie. Archbishop Mc Quaid officially opened St Anne’s School in 1961. The pupils attending the two smaller schools were amalgamated in the new building comprising two separate schools in the same campus, one for boys and one for girls. The new schools cost £20,000 to build. With the increasing numbers of children in the area it became apparent that the accommodation was inadequate and by 1970 there were as many prefabricated classrooms as solid rooms on site. The schools of the 60’s enjoyed very few facilities, class and this situation remained until the mid-eighties. Ironically, at one stage in the late 1970’s a class had to be held in St Anne’s Hall in the actual room which was once part of the original Tillystown National School in Lower Rd. In 1985 St Anne’s received sanction to expand, resulting in our present building. It consists of 16 spacious carpeted classrooms, administration facilities, staff room and a general purpose hall all surrounded by landscaped play areas, lawns and flower beds. As we are now in the 21st Century and pupil numbers are on the increase yet again, we see ourselves adding to our School building. Additions include two classrooms, a computer room, a new staff room and a library. The extension has been carefully and imaginatively designed and includes the development of a larger Car Park. The location of the school is quite magnificent, situated as it is on the southern end of the Shanganagh moraine (formed during the mid-Landian Ice Age, 10,000 years ago) enjoying panoramic views of the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. In 1991 the Shankill/Bray bypass was completed, which runs west of the school but thankfully does not spoil our view. |
