In February the children were treated to a magic show with environmentally
friendly messages performed by Marvin the Magician. With the aid of props and
clever slogans the children were made aware of the why regarding "reduce,
reduce, recycle and the consequences for our Environment if we don't take take
action.
As "Verne the Bird" so ably put it. We're not talking rubbish we're
just talking about it. Thanks to Laois County Council for funding the show.

St. Joseph's Green School took part in the parade again
this year. Children dressed up in costumes made from recyclable materials.
This helped build up an awareness of what can be recycled.
They paraded through the town chanting slogans to get
their message across:
"Plastic is drastic"
"Stop the drop"
"Go green now"
"Get fitter with litter"
"Make our tourists green with envy".

Our Lunch Policy is helping greatly to reduce the amount of
waste leaving our school. So costing us less. We depend on the children
and parents to comply with the policy i.e.
" Bring all leftover lunch home.
" Bring all milk cartons and wrapping home.
" Use a reuseable bottle for drinks.
" No cartons please.
Thank you for your co-operation in this matter in the school year 2004-5.

Infants, Senior Infants and first Class for donating the flowers.

We are constantly trying to make the children more aware of
waste and the everyday concept of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to this end. We:
" Provide a bin in Junior and Senior Infants for fruit peelings.
Collecting peels and teabags and dead flowers for composter
from hall, staff room and classes.
" Use both sides of photocopying pages when possible.
" Use old cardboard/material, buttons, bottles in our Art & Crafts
& Science lessons.
" Litter Rounds (weekly) involving 1st - 6th class through the year.
" Exchanging and selling books at end of school year to reduce the amount
of new books bought by children.
" Uniform Sale during the year.
" Replenish Art Bank and tidy it. Thanks to the children who help in these
areas.
