A message from the principal.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We have come to the end of yet another school year. Throughout the year the children have been made aware of he need to preserve and protect our environment. Tomorrrow depends a lot on what we do today. We ask for your continuing support in this area and we thank all who have helpedd create a more environmentally friendly school and a caring attitude.

  • Thanks to St. Josephs N.S. Parents Council for one hundred and fifty euros to finance Video of the Green Flag Celebrations.
  • Thanks to the Parents Council who donated laptop, data projector, TV, DVD and treats for pupils during the school year.
  • Thanks to all who saved tokens relating to accquiring additional resources TV, DVD, computer, calculators etc. for the school.
  • Thanks to parents who donated useful items to our school (fridge and computer trolley).
  • Thanks to Laois County Council for grant received of €150 to part fund this newsletter.

 

 

Throughout the school children are being educated about our environment. During the year 2004-2005 we have a sample of themes covered:

Junior Infants
We used recycled paper, egg cartons, yogurt cartons to create wonderful pictures, collage/paper maché and cross men (Teacher: Miss Boland).

Senior Infants
We constructed pencil holders from recyclable materials. We used fabric and fibre and buttons to create life size people. (Teacher: Miss K. Gleeson).

First Class
We made a frieze of Spring using paper, flowers, cloth and material. (Teacher: Sr. Marie Ward).

Second Class

We sowed bulbs in Spring, identified ordinary trees, learned about common birds and minibeasts. We studied materials man made and natural. Looked at different buildings and drew maps. We used materials from the art bank in our Art Classes for construction and some wool for knitting. (Teacher: Sr. A. Walsh)

Third Class
We studied our environment through our geography curriculum. Mountains, rivers, buildings in our community. We explored different environments, deserts, seaside and bogland. We made pictures depicting - fairy tales with fabric and old materials. (Teacher:Ms C. Curley)

Mixed 3rd/4th Class
We composed poems on pollution. We also planted a beech tree and sunflower seeds. We did some nature trails at the back of the school. We did work on the Irish Independent's weekly nature supplement.We entered the ESSO Nature Competition. We made models from recyclable materials.We made hedgehogs using clay. We studied the effects of acid rain and river pollution. We were involved in the Architect in School's Programme. (Teacher: Ms. C. Nolan)

4th Class
We were involved in the Architect in School's Programme where we made models. We studied Energy Awareness and ways of generating electricity. Through S.E.S.E. we constructed models using batteries and bulbs for energy, etc. The models were made from packaging/recycled materials.

5th Class
We studied Irish Forests and the Eco system and boglands. We studied different types of pollution - water and air. We studied recycling awareness and care of our environment e.g. green bins etc. We discussed ways of saving energy and the implications for the environment. We studied the timescale involved in breaking down different materials.

6th Class

We studied trees and the care of them. We studied recycling awareness and saving energy. We painted and varnished recycled boxes.
