St James' Park

I left Leeds early Saturday morning and using my BritRail pass I travelled the 2 hour train journey to Newcastle.Another strange place-more familiarisation to be done.My first stop was the tourist office and another map as well as a few brochures.I decided to take the open-top bus tour to help me get to know the place.

The city of Newcastle is dominated by St.James' Park because of the height it is on.Our tour operator referred to it as "the main place of worship" in the city.At the top of the page is a photograph of St.James' Park.

Because Newcastle is built on the Tyne river there are some eye catching bridges across it,although one member of a group of lads on the tour, who had travelled over from Holland on the ferry for a stag party advised me to go to Holland where he said the bridges were better.Below are a couple of pictures of 2 of the bridges.

Newcastle has a thriving shopping area in the centre of the city like Leeds. That night I stayed in the Youth Hostel to sample what it would be like.Newcastle is a very lively place at night-most of the pubs in the Bigg Market and the Quays areas thronged with people.Newcastle is renown for its nightlife. After sampling some of this including its local ale-Newcastle Brown Ale I retired to the Youth Hostel-a short ride on Newcastle's underground-the Metro.More travelling the following day.
