York

I arrived in York around 8 o'clock on Wednesday evening and headed straight for my hostel as tiredness was beginning to catch up with me again.I had stayed in Youth Hostels in Newcastle(costing £16 including breakfast and £2 supplement because I wasn't a member of the Youth Hostel Association) and Oxford(£20 including breakfast and £2 supplement) so I decided to stay in the Backpacker's Hostel in York which was the cheapest hostel-costing £11 excluding breakfast.

After a quick sleep I was full of life again and decided to explore the town.York was a much livlier place at night than Oxford.I decided to go into a pub beside the banks of the River Ouse which York is built on.In the pub were markings on the wall showing how high the water rises whenever the River Ouse bursts its banks. In the pub I got talking to a local man. When I told him that I was travelling around the country taking in the sights and sampling the local atmosphere he said he would take me to a local traditional English pub. From the certificates on the wall I could see that the pub had won awards. This very friendly local man bought me a pint but wouldn't let me buy one back.Afterwards I headed back to the hostel.

The following morning I decided to explore the town.Like in Newcastle and Oxford I took the open-top bus tour.York is best known for its medieval walls which go around the town for 2 1/2 miles and York Minster-the largest Gothic cathedral in Britain. At the top of the page is a picture of the cathedral looking up one of the streets.

In the afternoon I visited the National Railway Museum which is the world's biggest railway museum and passed away about 3 hours. Its exhibits range from Royal carriages, giant steam engines the Eurostar and miniature railway rides.Below is a picture of the Eurostar.

One of the attractions of the museum was a ride on a fully working miniature steam engine. You wouldn't want to be too worried about your clothes as the train pulled out and sprinkled particles of dust from the burning of the coal.Below is a picture of the engine.

After walking around part of the city's walls it was getting near time to depart for Leeds and my bus back to Ireland. In Leeds I walked around some of the areas I had been in the week before and had a last few pints of local ale.My bus left Leeds at 8.30pm and after travelling back across England and an overnight ferry crossing I was back in Dublin at 7am on Friday morning. That was the end of my week's adventure.

The background music on this page is a piece from Antonio Vivaldi-Concerto in FP.323.
